At Swindon station. 'The 10.40 Paddington service is delayed by 20 minutes due to disruptive passengers'. Oh joy. Come on Gasheads, let's at least get to Wembley first eh?!
Their atmosphere made me feel very nervous. Seeing we had over double fans and we usually are vocal, they put us to shame. One of the best atmospheres that I have witnessed from an opposing team.
Were you guys sitting next door to the Grimsby fans? All we could hear of them from up in the gods, when they weren't drowned out by 'Irene', was that bloody drum and hand clapping.
I was sat level 2 in the corner, great view by the way, the corner closer to the neutrals than the tunnel if that makes sense, and all game you could hear their drums which didnt stop once, not even when we scored to make it 1-1. Now it wasnt just their drums that made a noise, most of their fans were bouncing and singing as well. It was a great atmosphere from them. Sometimes when you have a drum and no one sings its pathetic but they were top class. Our lot though was quiet. I believe we were quiet due to the shocking start going behind after 2 minutes. That goal killed us. Yes we tried to bounce back with the 1 and only song 'Irene' that was sung but I think the shock of going behind early and not playing well at all killed our atmosphere. To me we didnt compete in the atmosphere department. Singing 'Irene' once every 10 minutes with no other song inbetween was poor I thought but again I put that down to our shocking start. I got bored with 'Irene' by 90 minutes to be honest.
Maybe we didnt sound so good as we had level 5 empty above my corner and neutrals to our right and what gasheads we had between myself and the neutrals on our level didnt sing much. If you were down behind the goal or more to the other corner where you has gas in level 1, 2 and 5, the atmosphere may have sounded much better. But their drums and bouncing and singing was quality from where I was.
I thought their lot made a lot of noise considering their numbers,fair play to them. They were by far the better team for the first 30 mins and with more clinical finishing,they could have had it sewn up by half time. Thank God we steadied the ship but it made for a very nervous afternoon! Sign of a good team to play as well as we did after such an early setback and seeing we appeared to be playing against the referee aswell at times - he made some very dodgy decisions from what I could see - DC and the boys did very well well to make it to 90 minutes. Thought extra time looked fairly evenly matched although we seemed to be tireder and more cramped-up than them and I was quite concerned about us finding 5 players capable of taking penalties! Needn't have worried though as that was 5 of the best penalties you could have wished for from our lads and based on our performances all season,we fully deserved to go up,even if we probably didn't deserve to beat Grimsby basrd on yesterdays game. They probably feel robbed but thats football and its the result that matters.We are back now and once again its been a rollercoaster ride to the end,but we should be used to that by now! DC deserves a knighthood for what he's achieved - bring on league 2!
Trollop won promotion in his 1st full season in charge with us. DC has done the same!
