Stone Roses, The Smiths, The Fall, Joy Divison/New Order and The Happy Mondays would come ahead of James in my list

Also above James would be New FADS, The Charlatans, The Verve and Primal Scream.

Actually primal scream probably deserve a spot in that top group.

He said arguably but the first 3 in your list are head and shoulders above as are Joy Division. IMO The Fall are one of the greatest bands ever never mind Manchester.

New Order though, never got that. ****ing awful imo. To bundle them together with Joy Division should get you a thread ban.

I only included them because they were what became of Joy Division. Peter hook and Bernard Sumner were still two of the most influential musicians in the Uk really.

Anyway, agree about the Fall. Mark E Smith was the goat of Indie

Not a fan of them at all. Curtis was a genius New Order I just didn't get.

Ian Curtis was a genius like Mark E Smith. I'm not really a New Order fan, but I do think what they contributed to that scene was notable.

I wouldn't really have James in there myself. I always thought they were a bit 'Vanilla'. I saw them play a couple of times at some festivals and it used to annoy me that everybody would sit down when they played 'Sit Down'

Grow up
