Thanks Tamerlo, some fascinating ones. Looked up Royal Palace and had forgotten he'd made his debut in the Coventry Stakes. Murless already knew he was his Derby colt, even though he ran down the field that day.
Kev, what a quality horse Royal Palace was! Ironic that Scobie Breasley turned down the Murless job to ride for Gordon Richards who never had a Classic winner. Scobie's worst decision of his life, I should think. Nonetheless, Scobie rode a lot of winners and the 1963 season was something special when his 176 winners pipped Lester's 175- deciding the jockey's championship on the very last day of the season. What tremendous jockeys they both were!
