Ozil reminded me of someone from the first time I saw him play for Germany, but it took me a year to remember who. The hero of Cinema Paradaiso is a twelve or thirteen year old boy with big, sad circles under his eyes. A priest at one point accuses him of whacking off all night. "You can see it in the circles under your eyes, it's obvious," he says (or Italian words to that effect.) It's a good line because you wondered about the circles ever since you saw the boy. And that was who I thought of when I saw Ozil, complete with the ashamed look the boy had after the priest talked to him.
