This seagull has got quite a lot of coverage on a variety of web sites.

Looking at how large it looks on the photo – almost half the size of the equine runner-up – it must have been pretty close to the camera. No idea how far the camera is from the side of the course at Brighton but it must be in the stands somewhere.

In the (at least) sixty years that photo finishes have been used, it is amazing that something like this has not been reported as happening before with a bird or some other species. I imagine that it probably has happened with some drunken reveller running down the track but that will not have been mentioned to deter copycats.
