I'm a big cricket fan and this is desperately sad news...has shocked the entire sporting world.

The young man had just ironed out his weakness and was on the brink of the test side again.

His family must be devastated after this untimely loss.

    God bless them.

This. Terrible news for Phil Hughes' family, and also horrifying for the bowler. Spare a thought or prayer for him too.

I am sure that all cricket lovers will be united in shock that this freak accident has left the Hughes family without their cricketer son and brother. Nothing that anybody can say will help them in their grief but they will be getting the best counselling that is available at this time.

From the point of view of the sport of cricket it has to be hoped that there is no sudden over-reaction and some sort of ban on the bowling of bouncers as the limited evidence available does suggest this was a million-to-one probability event. The limited footage appears to suggest that Phillip Hughes was aware that it was a bouncer and he was trying to play a hook shot. He mistimed his pivot, exposing the area at the bottom of his skull (top of his neck) that cannot be thoroughly protected by the helmet because he would be unable to move his head and neck in such a restrictive helmet.

I hope that considerable thought is going towards the living victim of this incident, the young bowler Sean Abbott. I expect that he has not slept since and memories of this will be haunting him for weeks, months, maybe years to come. This is the sort of notoriety that no sportsman would wish to endure. I hope that whatever counselling he is offered allows him to continue playing the sport.
