I think Meyler was closer to the 1 million mark, and wasn't there something about Quinn that initial fee was only 50k? rising on a game by game basis? I remember 2.5m for Brady though, cos I distinctly remember being pissed off that we got cam Stewart for 300k and he was the better player!!!! what the **** do I know!?
You on drugs mate? We were throwing the cash around in relative terms those days. Wasn't dudfield 250k? Unheard of for the old division 3. Alexander wasn't cheap either. Along with Elliot, Strong, Anderson......... the list goes on. seems like we bought about 8 new players every season. We had the biggest budget in the division I'm sure, and probably bigger than most if not all of the division about us.
Peter Taylor was hard to really warm too and at times frustrating to watch because he was so cautious. He had a massive budget in League 2 terms and remember lots of clubs where struggle after the collapse of ITV digital. What Phil Brown did unmatchable. Not only did achieve something never do before he totally change the landscape of club. He took average into the Premier League and kept them there. He obviously lost the plot a bit and did daft and embarrassing things. He probably probably didn't spent a lot less then Bruce with inflation. Bruce took a solid Championship side and turned them into a good promotion side who would of won the league with a goal scorer. Kept us in Premier League and got us to the Cup final. I know he has had the biggest budget in our history. But so have most clubs because the TV deals are huge. All three have gave me some amazing memories.
That was Molby. Molby actually made some decent signings. Green, Elliott, Ashbee, and Anderson where all Molby's. Phil Parkinson made some good signings too. Turner, Ricketts, Marney and Livermoore where all his. They may of been poor managers for us, but they both played a little part in our success.
I was pretty sure it was Molby but now youve sewn a seed of doubt. Little defo signed Alexander and Dudfield and wasnt Molby Strong and Anderson?
I've just checked and Transfermrkt have Meyler at £1.6m and Brady £2.2m From what I remember Quinn was about 50k up front with add ons that made it end at about half a million. Either way he was a real bargain and really important in the promotion push. On the Taylor spending money thing, in the 2002/03 season we spent £770k according to Transfermrkt, though most of that was on signings Molby made such as Elliott and Green. I can't sort by date so this could be wrong but from memory he signed Burgess, Joseph and Delaney for £264k. The next season the same site has us as only signing Walters and Myhill on permanents for 66k each and France for 20k. I thought Walters came on loan that year and re-signed the next year permanently? So, although he spent some decent money the season we moved into the KC, in our promotion season by my maths he spent about £90k on transfers which isn't/wasn't unheard of in the lower leagues.
Point still remains we had a large budget in those days. I always thought we got Dudfield because of the Leicester link with Taylor? I cant remember though I was only about 14 at the time.
In regards to Taylor signings it looks like of got confused with the Little/Molby signings. I just remember we signed a good few players around the end of the 90's and begining of the 00's. Around that time it did seem like we had a brand new squad every season.
You thought with the likes of: Holt, Beresford, Ryan Williams, Alexander, that we were going places. Was a bit of a false dawn.
Quality player Him and Alexander up-front with Wee Ryan Williams bombing down the wing - oh, those halcyon days
Whether we had an 'easy run' or not the facts are that Bruce was Manager when we got to the final. He was also Manager when we played in Europe. Do you think in 50 years time fans will be analyzing how and why we got there? It is now in the History of Hull City that we achieved these under Steve Bruce - where's the problem? Arsenal's name is etched on the FA Cup for 2014. The records will show that they beat us 3-2 in extra time.
Our history will show we got to an fa cup final, much credit deserved. However no one can say it wasn't an easy run. When it comes to Europe even time won't help mask the monumental f** up in not giving it a proper go!!
