The truth is you never know with young players. Carroll was awful in the Championship with Preston! Time will tell who will make the grade and who wont!

Yes but you said he went straight into the team from the reserves, and I was correcting you by pointing out he went on loan. (Also you only judge strikers on goals it seems, there is more to a forward in the modern game, assists being an obvious one.)

And Airey shouldnt be thrown into the first team unless needed due to injuries. If he looks good then go on loan to an unglamorous L1 team and see what its like to really fight for a place and develop by playinh regular games at a higher level than reserve team.

15 minutes in the PL every few games will do nothing for his development, but plenty for his ego. Carroll was **** when we first played him and it took a lot of tie before he started getting regular goals, we dont have the time to play Airey every week in case he does the same. Loan move.

You're getting a bit carried away Tash, loads of players have score lots for the reserves yet failed to make the grade so it isn't worth rushing him, and I think against Wolves we have good enough options assuming Best is fit.

  5. Just thought you'd like to know Carroll played games for Newcastle before he went to Preston on loan.

And i will correct myself. He played 12 games for Preston and scored 1 goal.

He played 13 games for the Toon before going out on loan.

  6. Look, i'm not saying he should be hailed as our new Shearer and be given starts, just 10 minutes if we're 2/3 nil up?

What use is that for his development? Just trying to excite fans by bringing on a young local lad.

Why take a risk on Airey for such an important game when Ranger has been waiting in the wings for ages and has bags more experience and proven ability (albeit lacking a goal) at this level. Also Ranger's strength would be an asset in what will be a physical game.

Me and Shola make an excellent duo. Did you see us against Wigan? What a finish by Shola that was.

I didn't say you had him down as a starter, I just think we'll need the experience in the Wolves match, and that's maybe the kind of match where the Best and Loven combo can work.

I say give him a chance. Make him a sub and give him a little game time if we're doing well. He obviously wants it, and he's performing to get it, so he should be rewarded for the efforts which a lot of youth players don't bother to make.

There's no reason to really follow a set rule where we HAVE to send him out on loan first. If he's scoring an awful lot of goals, and shows a bit of class in the reserve matches, then give him a shot. Even if his goalscoring rate halved against first team EPL players, he'd still be a damn good striker.

Perfect example is Donaldson, was banging the goals in before his injury and is looking a passenger at Hartlepool. Throwing Airey in now would be madness!

And back on the scoresheet now in the reserves - to me Donaldson and Airey are a tad like Ferguson in that they may be too light weight and both need bulking up
