No he’s not dead, but I was just reading about him, and thought God bless him....for the sliding tackle!
With the passing of Jimmy McInch, I remember the Scottish contingent that flooded into Cardiff City. Every season the full team played the reserves in a season opener “friendly”. I remember Jim Upton a full back again ginger and fiery, breaking two legs in the game...one I think was Alan Harrington, and maybe Steve Gammon...a disaster for city and the players. Here Peter Rodrigues reminds us:

When I joined Cardiff City, they had just been relegated. I played in the reserves at a young age, but once, in a public trial match, I wasn’t picked for the reserves. In the first half, a young reserve, a Scottish full-back, broke his leg. Then in the second half the other reserve full-back broke his leg!

I suspect a few of the older members of the forum will remember this game....watch BT go! :emoticon-0103-cool:

Can't resist a challenge Masky :emoticon-0126-nerd:

Peter Rodrigues played for City 1961- 1965

Alan Harrington missed the 1963 - 64 season due to a broken leg. It was broken again in 1965-1966 v Orient, ending his career

Steve Gammon broke his leg in 1960/1961 v Denis Law - Man City. It was broken twice in the next three seasons, virtually ending his career.

So my guess is it was a 1963 - 64 season opener 'friendly' that is the match you refer to.

I wasn't at that game but BfB would have been, he just can't remember that far back these days :frown:

On the other hand, I might have completely drawn the wrong conclusion!

Out of you ‘old gits’ who saw the City play first? I’m a relative infant who first set foot on the bob bank in early 70’s.

Mid 60's with my dad and uncle Jim for me either on the wooden benches in the Canton Stand, or standing in the right hand Grandstand enclosure.

I do actually remember watching Peter Rodrigues from the enlcosure in what may have been his final season. Saw him take out a winger into the concrete wall by the dugout with a sliding tackle - crunch! He was a master at it and had a very quick turn of pace as well.

I expect Masky remembers John Charles coming to the club but wont admit it - he's far too young.

Probably gave him a lift to his first home game.

I apparently went with my Dad in the late 50s early 60s in the Old First Division but can’t recall any of the games. The first match I can remember clearly was the seasons opener, after relegation, in August 1962. City v Newcastle in an amazing 4-4 draw. Allchurch’s first game I think.
