    Reattach your knees:

    - We just played one of the three best sides in the world. If you took the world's 20 best players they would have at least 5.
    - Until they scored several of our players were clearly able to compete at their level. In the second half we kept going.
    - Sterling and Coutinho looked good.
    - The new signings - Can, Lallana came on and did well. Markovic wasn't much involved but was tidy. Balotelli had a reasonable game all considered. It wasn't his fault.
    - On Balo, Carra has said that Pepe asked him to swap, not the other way around.
    - We all know Skrtel is hopeless. He will lose us goals to Madrid, QPR, whoever. Last night was no surprise. The other issues in our side - lack of DM, RB were always going to be exposed, as they are routinely in the PL vs Villa, West Ham etc.
    - Mignolet had a decent game.
    - We really should have scored. Madrid didn't get out of second gear in the second half but three nil still flattered them. If we'd scored they might have started playing again but who knows.

    On experience:

    - Ronaldo has won the CL one time less than Rodgers, Sterling, Lallana etc have played in it.
    - That Madrid side is full of genuine world class, seasoned professionals. We have a team which can perform at a level approaching that but is currently devoid of confidence and robbed of our now talismanic striker.
    - Our team is still gelling. Great example of it when Balo took the ball out of the air brilliantly and played Sterling through, but Sterling hadn't arced his run as he expected.

Outcomes (what little they are) from last night:
    - We desperately need a defensive coach. Our defence from any sort of cross is a joke.
    - An experienced right back and centre back would be lovely. We need leaders.
    - There were lots of promising individual performances - Sterling, Cou, Lallana, Can - even Joe Allen had a decent game. Madrid were simply much more clinical and much faster in the final third - an issue of pure skill and also confidence.
    - Sterling once again showed the level he's at now (incredible for 19) and the equally incredible potential he has. Coutinho looks bang in form again.

Realistically we were never going to win this game. 3-0 is a fair reflection of the sides on paper and that score didn't really do us credit. If we capture that sort of intensity again we'll start winning consistently in the PL. Remind me how Bayern did vs Madrid last season at home?

As I said elsewhere, we were never going to win, but I would have liked us to force Real into a sweat to beat us. Or even got them into 4th gear.

I think Sturridge would've done that... transforms us having two pacey outlets and would've freed up Balotelli.

Props on a bloody fast reply btw.

actually a defensive coach is a bit of nonsense. that kind of thing doesn't happen. Its the emphasis on dicking around and taking risks and passing it 45 yards while ignoring defensie training totally thats the issue.

we all prob would acknowledge that if tony pulis was given the job in 2 weeks we'd be far more solid in defense.... the whole coaching team is in question here. emphasis.... leads to coutinho not hooking a clearance away but tying to beat a man on the edge of his own box from a corner, losing it and form there the whole team is not set.

I more agree with sir red here... had real beat us 3-0 having played brilliantly that'd be fine.. i'd say the lads gave thier all but we were beaten 3-0 by a team cruising who took 10 mins of pressure and then passed us off the park easy.

there is a thught that if real had no classico this weekend they might of given us a bayern style mauling...... i think rodgers has gotten away with it here. it could've easily been 7 if they converted a few and were going for it for 90mins.

Surely that's an issue of coaching? Looking at good defensive sides like Atletico and Chelsea, they combine natural ability with being incredibly well drilled. Maybe the coaching is fine and we don't have the right characters in our team. Maybe it's a mix of both... but we look shapeless as soon as sides go at our midfield.

What I'm saying is Rodgers either needs to sort it out himself or hire someone that can get the entire team defending as a unit. Even just adopt a proper pressing game.

It is frustrating... just the difference in quality isn't it. We could have won, it's football after all, but 9/10 times quality trumps on the day performances.

you cannot just hire one guy to work on defensive side when rodgers, pascoe and marsh are clearly not cutting it. they all have to be emphasize and give time to the "ell drilled" part of it. I see no evidence over 18months let alone the last 2 months of improvement in defensive set up.

I doubt the coaching is fine.

I don't disagree about characters but again the system must suit the players... or players bought to suit the system.. neither is happening.

We are trying to play a pressing game and advance full backs.. but our keeper is not a sweeper so there's too much space behind the back 2 now so they drop off and are not called on it. they drop off there's too much space for midifeld to cover between back 4 and forwards.... therefore we should be setting up deeper as a whole team and not applying a press until the half way line... surrender the ball to the opposition.

we are playing a 4-3-3 with lone striker and two lads who don't cover full backs wide.... balotelli is completely unsuited to the role.

but then there's the pathetic state of affairs any time a set piece is conceded. the system there is different its how to defend. We clearly cannot and utter panic is setting in. nobody trusts their team mate to mark their own man nor keeper to ever catch one so they go leave men and attack balls and any touch puts it over their head... or worse men just peel off round the back for free headers due to ball watching.... or we've seen set ups where there's far too much space between back 4 and keeper and any good ball into the area is a goal.

this is criminal given the wages and time involved and is the worst of all as frankly we don't concede that many from open play do we.... ronaldo's goal last night was good.. great finish... the other two were set piece failures. against qpr you could put both goals they got down to again set piece failures to clear or mark properly. and the list goes on and on.

  7. Not one of our current players would get in the current Real Madrid squad! #perspective

    I do agree with that...

some might develop toward it but none as of today would get near their bench. sterling and coutinho included.

I think Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge are the only ones who could get into their squad - not starting, but good enough to be in the squad.

Lol disregard the numbers in the squad and the logistics etc, I just feel they have the quality to be at a club like Real Madrid.

Again, in the starting line is a different question. But good enuogh to be in the squad. <ok>

  12. I was talking about the squad they had last night, hence the word 'current'. I edited above, maybe Studge over Hernandez but thats it.

Fair enough, I'm just talking the quality our players and those 3 I listed above are good enough to a) compete and b) be in their squad.

Maybe Moreno for Marcelo because Marcelo is just cack.

  14. I think Studge, Coutinho and Sterling all have the potential to be good enough (although I'd also say Studge is nearing is peak), there are a couple of others such as Moreno and Flanno :))) that are very good for such a young age too.

PS...Flanno's game is about consistency. Jones, Finnan and Arbeloa were both consistent FBs and my top three FBs for my time as a Liverpool fan, I think Flanno can follow a similar path but hopefully not the Jones injured route <laugh>
