Fair comments TF, but not for me. To me all the top players are the ones with attacking flair, the entertainers, the artists. Beckenbauer is in there for for me, and was both a mid and defender, but had more flair and skill than Moore. But I can easily see why many would plump for Moore in the top 10. I would rate Greaves, Hoddle and Mackay all higher than Moore, because they all had more attacking flair to their game, plus other attributes.I would only ever argue this on a Spurs board though, because Moore's iconic staus, has elevated his game to a level that wasn't there for me, who watched him all through the 60s and indeed that World Cup, where he was outstanding. For me, our best player in the 66 team was Bobby Charlton, again going on my beliefs in the attacking side of football. His wonder goal v Mexico was the moment that kick started that tournament for us.

The thing about Moore that often gets cited is, rather than clog the opponents for 90 minutes because defenders could do so, he would actually defend and use the ball in a more intelligent manner than (for the sake of argument) Jack Charlton. The exact same could be said for other defenders at the time, notably Beckenbauer and Blanchflower, but whilst the former is rightly held up as one of the greatest ever, the latter never gets his due.
Pele is IMO the most over rated footballer in any generation as he spent his entire career in two "safe" leagues and never tested himself in european football were the challenges are far greater. This is why Maradona will IMO always be regarded as the greatest as he practically single handedly inspired club and country to success and performed in the toughest league in the world at that time. Yes you can talk about Peles "goals" for santos, but who was defending at the time? i very much doubt Brazilian domestic clubs at a high standard of defenders at that time, what would have happened if Pele moved to one of the smaller italian clubs? I suspect he would have struggled.
There's a few hundred English/British footbalelrs the exact same can be said about. That Geordie plonker who contributes nothing on MOTD springs to mind for one...
Did you ever actually see him play?? I somehow doubt it!! He was without doubt one of the greatest of all time. The fact that he never played in Europe is totally irrelevant. Very few, if any South Americans did in those days. Ardiles & Villa were the first major South American stars to come to European football.
You'd be surprised how many people consider him on a par with some of the great players of the 90s - even though I can name ten strikers better than him without thinking about it (for the record: Batistuta, Roberto Baggio, Klinsmann, Bergkamp, Van Basten, Romario, Davor Suker, Raul, Stoichkov, Salas)
Shearer was a good striker. However, on the scale of all time great players, he wouldn't even register!
I hate the way that there's no balance when judging today's players against those of the past. People either massively overrate the current ones or write them off completely, for the most part. I'd be very surprised if the likes of Messi and Ronaldo don't end up in the history books alongside the likes of Maradona and Eusébio. They've got quite a while to go left in their careers, but they've excelled so far and don't look like slowing down.
I can easily add ten more to the list - Lineker, Sheringham, Crespo, Mijatovic, Bierhoff, Zamorano, Henry, Bebeto, Owen, Vieri Besides, saying Pele is the most overrated player ever is ridiculous, because you can't even call him the most overrated Brazilian striker of all time. That would be Ronaldo. And you can't call him the most overrated player named Ronaldo...
