Lambert was good at sending the keeper the wrong way in the lower divisions. He was clever with the angle of his run up and body position on a few occassions. In the Premier League it looked like he felt the pressure. He would just commit to a corner and blast it there. To be fair both methods worked, but that's down to Lambert having a right foot like a cannon.

If you take them like Tadic you are giving the keeper much more of a chance. Ward-Prowse should be the number one taker even if Tadic is on the park at the same time now.

Indeed, I doubt he will ever be able to hit a ball as hard as Sir Rickie, but if he can put it high and wide then a keeper would have to move early to get close

I can remember a number of Rickie's penalties which the keeper got a hand to, but the power of the shot took it in. That was exactly what happened with JWP's today. An excellent penalty, and I look forward to dozens more of the same over the next 15 years or so.

I'm not sure you can say he is way off Lambert's standard after just one penalty. The fact is, he hit it hard and to the side which is typical Lambert. Goalkeepers often went the right way with Lambert but were beaten by the power of the shot. Very similar I would have said.

As I said on the match thread, I found the whole thing hilarious. My mate had money on Mane as first goal scorer so when Mane grabbed the ball and put it on the spot he was starting to celebrate... and then Koeman (via Fonte) took the ball away from Mane and gave it to JWP. :)

Really glad he scored though, a poor miss could have messed with his head.

Absolutely blasted it, never in doubt. At least that's how it looked from between my fingers.

Both have 100% records at Saints, and long may that continue for JWP. He gets a good combination of power and lift, which means that keepers are less likely to keep them out. Yes, the keeper got fingertips to the ball but he didn't seem to have significantly altered the path of the ball. Rickie has gone elsewhere. JWP looks our best prospect to replace him.

Having seen it now- much more convincing than tadic. But this is just one penalty. Not sure you can displace tadic with one pen just because he missed one.

I think that you can. It's not like he has a long history of success with penalties.

What about JWP's overall play on Saturday? I've been a huge defender of him when certain "fans" have said JWP shouldn't be playing, but I was on a stag do! Was he good when he came on?

I think he's an absolute baller and is going to be amazing personally

We were pushed about in midfield first half, couldn't sustain possession, and couldn't find a telling pass. The second half, with JWP on the field, we looked a different team. That may have had more to do with whatever Ron said to the team at half time than with JWPs presence, but the fact remains we were a much better side with him in it.
