To my knowledge(which is extremely limited) The Pompey fans I know prefer us to know them as Skates to some of the other words often chosen.

I believe us Scummers and the Skates accept the two words as a simple form of recognition rather than a means of belittling each other.

When used it is the words that accompany that often cause offence.

I beg to differ.

In slang the word "Skate" refers to a drunk or it can be used to call someone a slaker, someone who wont work but loafs around lazilly, or it can be used to call someone an contemptable person, underhanded or dispicable.

It is a generally insulting word the origins of which date back hundreds of years and was not something invented for specific use against Portsmouth FC and its fans, just as the word "Scum" can have its origins traced back hundreds of years and was not invented for use purely against Southampton FC and its fans. It just so happens than Scum is a much more famous word that Skate when it comes to insults.

Nah you're called skates because you shag fish. It's about time you stopped, especially with all these sustainability problems.

If you actually read the thread you will recognize that I was commenting on the statement made by Saints Go Marching In who said "the only people who can be labelled a skate, is a pompey fan". I gave examples of what the word Skate can be used for outside of football, thereby proving that statement invalid.

I dont care what the story is behind use of that word in to referance to Pompey fans, I dont care about the rivalry and I fail to see what "sustainability problems" have to do with a comment about the use of a word. And quite frankly, I find the line about "shagging fish" vulgar and uncalled for, expecially in the context of my participation in this thread thus far.

There are far more obliging Pompey fans on this website who will bandy wicked words with you than I so in the future I would prefer it if you sought them out for your wind ups instead of addressing them to me.

You will never find me name calling or saying unkind things about our dear friends from the east.

That would be oh so yesterday as I have moved on to new rivalries now.
