This annoyed me at the previous home derby game, as many saints fans sang pay up pompey. I was at the game but was told by mates who watched on TV that it sounded like pompey were singing really loudly - even though it was us 'mocking' them.

I think come April 7th, it would be better to not help their fans seem good, when we all know they are even more over rated than Stewart Downing.

However, will many people be brandishing a trusty five pound note to wave in the direction of the fishy ones in the corner? That's always good fun.
 
Agreed, this chant should be banned on the ground of inserting false believe within mutuals minds.

This is just awful. I like to insult our friends but this is beyond the Pail.

is how it goes I am reliably informed.
 
No offense, but your fans weren't loud at all for the first 60 or so (maybe 50) minutes of the derby. First half you were very quiet indeed.

Also, I have a source who states that the chant was **** off Pompey, not Pay up Pompey (I could make out the tune but not the exact words). If it was the latter, then that's disappointing that the Southampton fans at the game were so unoriginal.
 
Hi Lapras! I too am disappointed with the drivel some of my fellow Saints fans chants with regard to Pompey. We need to incorporate a lot more wit and originality into our chants (a la Liverpool, Manchester City) and ignore the pathetic baiting of PFC.

Firstly SGMI, I totally agree and said this to my mates the other day.
Lapland, let's be honest your dis-jointed shed of a ground probably has the worst acoustics in the land and the saints away support is up there with the best this year. From where I was we sang for pretty much most of the game but did have a quiet patch before half time. Poopey fans sang quit a lot apart from when we scored until you scored but what ruins the atmosphere the most is that bellpiece and his drum and doorbell, it sounds soo ****.
 
Regardless of acoustics, I was sitting right on the corner between the North Stand and the Milton End, so I could tell when the Southampton fans were chanting and when they weren't, and in the first half I think I can remember that there were few chants except for a couple of renditions of the When the Saints Go Marching In, which were subsequently drowned out by booing.

Exactly, wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure (apparently). The same could be said for our chants I think.
 
Always laugh when other fans boo songs. What's the point? Just shows how stupid they are that they can't reply with a song to 'drown' out our saints ones.

The derby game I was referring to was the last time we played each other at St Mary's, if you had read the post properly, and for all the hype surrounding Pompey's away fans I was shocked at how little the poopey 'faithful' sung. You started to find your voices WHEN 4-1 UP, but until then you were drowned out by the home saints fans.

Always makes me chuckle when Pompey fans think their support is on a different level to everyone elses. A level below, perhaps.
 
You're calling us stupid? That's a bit rich coming from someone who thinks referring to Portsmouth as 'Poopey' is a witty way of referring to their rivals..... (no offense)

And where have we claimed our support is on a different level? To quote Wikipedia: citation needed.

There was a period during our first season in the Premier League when the media hyped the fans to a ridiculous degree - particularly after the memorable thrashing Arsenal gave us at Fratton Park when you couldn't hear the Arsenal fans at all despite them being several goals up.

Unfortunately there is minority of Pompey fans who perpetuate this myth but the more sensible of us - ie, most of us who are still on this website during these dark times - dont and nowadays you find more Southampton fans acusing us of believing we are the best fans in the world so they can take shots at us than you find Pompey fans who actually claim it.

'Poopey' is just a word trying to get a reaction, which in this case, it has.

Now, it's a bit rich for you to be questioning the meaning behind our insults, as you lot down the road call us 'scummers'. This is perhaps the most boring, least thought out insult that you could have come up with. Scum can be referred to absolutley anything. For example, child abusers, murderers etc can all be labelled scum, yet the only people who can be labelled a skate, is a pompey fan.

Skate is literally only directed at you, which is why many of our fans even call ourselves scummers. Not sure where 'scummer' originated from, but it can be used to describe many things, which in this case, makes it not original at all, just boring.

I beg to differ.

In slang the word "Skate" refers to a drunk or it can be used to call someone a slaker, someone who wont work but loafs around lazilly, or it can be used to call someone an contemptable person, underhanded or dispicable.

It is a generally insulting word the origins of which date back hundreds of years and was not something invented for specific use against Portsmouth FC and its fans, just as the word "Scum" can have its origins traced back hundreds of years and was not invented for use purely against Southampton FC and its fans. It just so happens than Scum is a much more famous word that Skate when it comes to insults.
 
All the quiet fans went down to pompey, the louder ones didn't like th idea of the bubble so stayed in the pubs in town.

Well, yes but you know what the media are like for hyping up things (i.e. the Champions League), so can hardly fault us for that.

You make the mistake in assuming that calling us Poopey annoys me or winds me up. That is not so. What it does do however, is make you look quite sad really (again, no offense) and by calling us that, you (and anyone else who calls us that) are doing yourself a great disservice. That's just my view at least.
