Oh so now you're not only telling me who I shouldn't despise but who I should. And here's me thinking I can have my own opinion.
I have seen Paul Weller roughly a squillion times in many venues around the world. From a club in Amsterdam to an old theatre in Los Angeles, and from the Harlem Apollo in New York to a very small gig in Abbey Road Studios I quite like him
Does Weller make songs like English Rose now or anytime since The Jam? I've got to admit that the Style Council was such a wrong change for me that I've ignored his work ever since. Which album would you recommend for someone who loved The Jam?
I think its very difficult to answer an question about any songs being like other songs. English Rose is a excellent song, but you might find you like his new stuff too. To be honest each album is very different so just Spotify a few of his newer albums to see what you like I'd go for Setting Sons or All Mod Cons as Jam albums, but hey each to their own
It's hard to pick out just one due to how his music has changed throughout his solo career. I think if you're trying to get back into him, probably Wild Wood. For me, his best solo albums are his two most recent, but that's because I'm getting into more psychedelic and electronic music, and those both have a bit of that. Of course, someone who is looking for something coming off of The Jam probably won't want that. In terms of Jam albums, my fave is still The Gift (even though that is the least Jam-esque). Of course, this is all my opinion, theirs may say something different.
I think the 2 periods are very comparable - he did some wonderful stuff in The Smiths plus some very average stuff, and likewise solo. The fact he's churned out a hell of a lot more as a solo artist just means there's more average work than The Smiths produced.
Wildwood would be a good starting point, but as whatshisface said, his albums look at so many genres it's hard to know which one you'd like most. I'm absolutely certain you'd love Stanley road though. It's impossible not to.
Yeah I loved The Smiths and saw them twice, but I don't feel qualified to comment on his solo work as I've not heard nearly enough
I think your mixing up "despise" & "I think he's a bit of a knob" Here is doing a pub singer impersonation.
