Ferdinand was today appointed 'Director of Football' as opposed to his previous title of 'Head of Football Operations', make of that what you will but it's akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic...
Who would work with Ferdinand being DOF? Many managers/coaches have said that they hate working with a Director of Football.
I'd rather we stick with what we have for the remainder of the season and not rush into a decision. There are plenty of capable managers and coaches on the continent and many will become free during the close season.
Agreed 100%. I can't believe that some are having a go at him for not allowing Redknapp to have his way. What if he did speak up and advise Tony. Wasn't that part of his job. I dare say that if TF had someone to advise him at the time he would not have made all the disastrous decisions he has to date. He was a legend and deserves at least as much of a chance as many of you gave Redknapp and would have continued to give him. Have another look at Col's stats and then tell me he was good for us. If he thinks Sherwood can do a job for us, I'm prepared to go with that. McLaren is a non-starter. Clement will be a gamble just as Paulo Sousa was. The trouble is he will be an expensive gamble given his current employers and therefore the calibre of players he is used to watching. I'm not averse to taking a gamble after 3 years of selecting on past reputations but he has to be given time and be realistic enough to expect that he won't get a bucket load of money to throw around. One man who has not been named but who seems to fit all my criteria is Aitor Karanka at Boro. He has worked miracles with no money. They are successful, play football and stand a good chance of promotion. Remember where they were the last 3 years. He was also a coach at Real (or was it Barca) and has built a young team with next to no money. I would have though a better bet in the long run than either PC or Sherwood.
I think we need to look beyond what they are doing now and what they can bring to the club. With this in mind Clement has to be the right man. He has a strong relationship with the manager of the strongest team in Europe arguably the world, if Clement was to come to us, where do you think Real's youth and development players would come for season long loans on little or no money. I like the thought of Sherwood but what does he bring to the table, more ex Spurs players...
I'd go for Sherwood......did ok at Spurs. Levy of course didn't see him as high profile enough, TS would have done a good long term job at Spurs if given the time, I'm sure.
I would love it if Paul Clement was announced as our manager, but I can't see him wanting to be in the No.1 seat just yet. Below is a link to a rather excellent article on him where he is wanted by so many top clubs including Arsenal who want him to take over from Wenger. He also fondly has this to say about us...... ''With every season that passes his name seems to be linked with a bigger team. Last year as he helped guide Real to win the Copa del Rey the whispers started that Brighton and Fulham wanted him. Last May as he helped guide Madrid to Champions League final glory in Lisbon, his name was mentioned as a possible long-term QPR manager. West Brom also emerged as a candidate for his signature after the club decided not to continue with Pepe Mel. The QPR link will not go away because of his late-father’s playing career that included 470 first team appearances. The club won promotion back to the Premier League on the same day Madrid won their 10th European Cup last May and he described the double triumph as “the perfect day”. Two weeks ago it was even suggested that Arsenal are considering turning to Clement to replace Arsene Wenger at the end of next season. 'I think it’s soon,' he said last May when asked about when he would be making the step up to becoming a number one. 'A few opportunities have come my way. But this [Madrid] is a difficult place to leave. It’s a great club, a great city, a great tradition and it gives you the opportunity to win things.'' I'm still clinging on to the hope that we'll get Clement in, but, realistically, I suspect that Sherwood has already been agreed and that mentioning the likes of Clement and McLaren is to make us believe that we are being listened to. Anyone will be better than Redknapp, though.
I'm quoting myself from earlier not through vanity but because I still want to know what people think of this situation. It does often cause problems down the line, even if the new coach/manager and DOB say that ther're perfectly happy with the situation to start with. What sort of policy do Real Madrid have when it comes to signing players? Who chooses them? Apparently Sherwood and Ferdinand get on okay .... but that was when Ferdinand wasn't such a big cheese in the management set-up they were part of.
Don't really get the fascination with Clement tbh. He's never managed a team before. Not saying he wouldn't necessarily be a good manager though. Mentioning McClaren is a joke. He ruled out going to Newcastle earlier in the season FFS. Why on earth would he leave a Derby team he's built and come to our basket case? Its Tim nice but Dim I'm afraid
