Southampton lost today, whether that works in our favour or not I don't know. Hopefully there won't be any heads dropping after today, need to roll up our sleeves and try and get a result (difficult as it may be) at Southampton on Tuesday. And I hope we get revenge against Burnley on New Years Eve!
Gutted after that - Dawson looked very rusty after being out for so long and after they scored the momentum was with them. We couldn't then retain possession - Brady, Hobbs guilty of this. Missed Mclean big style. Needed to play ugly after we went 2-0 up and see the game out. Just shows what a topsy turvy this divison is. Lacked options off the bench - the likes of Garcia and possibly Pusic would have worked the channels better than Brady who was too predictable all game for me.
Anybody else get tired of him doing his little party tricks when the simple ball will suffice. When he did it simple he did well and tested their fullback and keeper. In comparison Stewart setting up Fryatt's first was textbook for a winger.
This reminds me of I think it was Dowies first away game at Portsmouth 2- 0 up and then we lost 3-2, I hope what happened after that does not happen again. It sound like when Dawson was brought on the team lost it shape, and I suspect they then started to defend to deep. I have to say if Pearson had been in charge this would not have happened, but on the other side we probably would not have scored 2 goals. NB has to learn from this, once you get two goals in front you should never give away a lead, set two banks of four and see the game out.
We didn't go two up in that game, but yes, the capitulation sounded similar. Now we know what the QPR fans must have felt at the KC a few years back when Elliott turned them over at the death. Mind you, it's not often that teams come out on top against a 78th minute 2-0 deficit.
Everyone around me (and me) said WHAT? when Stewart went off and Dawson came on. Absolutely crazy decision even for an inexperienced manager. That being said the dye had already been cast. Virtually as soon as our second goal went in we stopped pressing the ball. The correct decision would have been to address where the problem lie; in central midfield. Barmby should have shored up/flooded the centre of the park so they had less opportunity and time to hoof the ball to Rodriguez which was all they were doing anyway. Assuming Stewart was blowing, which I didn't think he was anyway, then take him off, move Koren over to the left and bring Cairney on to help out in the middle, go 4-5-1. Brady was dire today and having Stewart looking so direct and effective mereley made him look worse. He should have gone off, not Steward as he was just stood watching everyone when we lost posession. I think we will tell a lot about how the Barmby era will pan out by the reaction in the next two games. Big test now for Nick.
That's an easy one, he's meant to start playing again when/if Dudgeon gets injured or he loses form. You certainly don't play him against a side like Burnley when he isn't match fit and play him out of position. Absolutely crazy. Nick must learn fast coz that was a huge cock-up things needed to be changed to re-establish initiative, what he did made the situation worse.
There seemed to be some confusion between Dudgeon and Dawson about who was playing left-back when the sub happened, and Dawson eventually seemed to reluctantly put himself there. I'd like to know who Barmby actually wanted to play left-back and who he wanted on the wing. Did he say anything about it on Humberside after the game? I'm sure he'll have been asked about the sub.
Was I at the same game as some of you? The ref was ****e, our shape was ****e, our idea of pretty training ground flicks was ****e and our substitutions were ****e. Burnley was ****e, but they sure as hell embarrassed us. Stewart was constantly failing to do his job and try and pass his man; sorry, there was one exception, a well-run assist for Fryatt, but why, oh why, was that the exception? Brady was dismal; cocky and without any real ambition. He gave away possession with alacrity and posed little or no threat for most of the game. I lost track of how many times Brady and Stewart interchanged position â it was shambolic and the lack discipline throughout finally told. There were huge chunks of the game when we failed to exploit the corners of the pitch. Pretty football, even good football is fantastic, but it is ****e without an end product. We did so much and failed to capitalise â that is not promotion form by any stretch of the imagination. None of goals came from ability to compete with the head; two of theirs came from our lack of ability to compete with the head. I think it was Stewart who only had to poke his head forward and get an easy glance on the ball for a simple goal â what did he do? He ****ing ducked like some daft school kid who had no positional sense â it was a free-kick FFS! Our ability in the air is a legacy that NP left us with and it is a unmitigated disaster. Dawson was not so daft a substitution but it was clear that the instructions were, as neither player slotted into a position. Dawson should have played wing â the back 4 should have been left alone! Ade came on when we needed steadying; he has height and not a lot else. On their first goal, McShane was the obvious sub â if it then went pear-shaped, everybody could blame him, just as they always do (even when he gets MOTM) â now NB has to be questioned; butâs that is what management is all about. We made Burnley look very poor for huge tracts of the game and then we let then (deservedly) beat us at home from a 2 goal deficit - no excuses - we were ****e for the period of the game that mattered. Southampton will have something to prove after today and we will find them a real handful.
Yes! last minute of the first half when he cut inside the box, had he passed to Koren to slot in what would of been an easy finish to make it 2-0 it would of perhaps killed them completely. Instead he greedily took the shot and barely challenged the keeper. That been said when he does decide to cross it he can't half get some power and whip on it, definitely think he could benefit from Barmby's stewardship until the end of the season.
how about 2-0. but they will learn from it. blip. at least barmby said how it was and did not fudge the issue unlike Pearson would have.
well said and spot on ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this. More or less what barmby said on the radio & tv. Blip.
Besides the decent link-up play that failed to create goals or shut-up shop, just what positives do you take from that game? I have stated fairly and clearly where I think we failed - your throw-away comment does nothing but endorse your wearing of rose-tinted glasses. Most of what I have posted was evident under NP; today it proved very costly in terms of points and morale. We should have buried a very poor Burnly and we failed in a spectacular manner.
I can't remember it now because it was last night, but there were several things in your post that I thought sounded as though you just wanted to be negative. Having re-read the post you said it was shambolic that Brady and Stewart were swapping wings, which makes no sense. You also said the the first 78 minutes aren't important it was just the last 12 that 'mattered'. If we'd conceded 3 in the first 78 minutes and scored 2 in the last 12 you'd say the opposite. Obviously there is no period of tiem that's more important than another. It's who gets the most goals not when they get them.
