Bergkamp wouldn't challenge Wengers views and has the 'non flying' problem. Steve Bould would be my choice but who knows who Wenger will want probably Boro Primic.
Speaking of Steve bould anyone else think he should be given a shot at succeeding wenger I've always thought he's done a great job with the u18s and knows the system well. It'll be nice to see a former player given a crack.
Would prefer bergkamp to Viera but as for Steve bould I doubt many people expected wenger to get the nod when he became manager.
I think I read somewhere that Bould has made it clear that he's perfectly happy in his job at the moment and is not interested in the number two position. I think he wouls be a good choice though.
I don't think I would want someone who has never managed a club before. Wenger, whilst he was relatively unknown in this country was reasonable experienced at the club level in France, at a time when French football was growing in influence, and I think we have to think that this assistant will be our new manager in a few years at most. Having said that, given Dutch football's resurgence, and Ajax's revival, I think Frank De Boer would be the kind of candidate we should be looking at, with a view to them eventually being a Wenger replacement. I don't know if we would get him, but Ajax have the same team oriented, youth focused system that we have. We could go to Montpellier in France and try and get Rene Girard. He seems to have done very well with a relatively unknown squad. I can't say I like any of the English candidates, although Roberto Martinez has said he is leaving Wigan, whatever happens. Might be an interesting candidate as an assistant for a few years under Wenger and then, who knows. I think we should not be too sentimental about our ex-players, their playing record do not necessarily have a bearing on their managerial abilities.
Well, I'm not suggesting that Bould should replace Wenger, but become his assistant. I don't necessarily think that it's a prerequisite that the assistant naturally becomes an eventual replacement either. As for sentimentality, I'm under no illusion that ex players don't always make good managers, that's why I wouldn't want Adams at Arsenal in a managerial position (not yet anyway) his managerial record has been pretty dire. The difference is though that Bould has already proved himself with the youths and reserves, winning the youth FA cup. Plus he has the inside knowledge of Arsenal, playing with winning teams and having the experience of knowing what it takes to push on and win titles, I think he'd make an exellent assistant.
Perhaps, I just think Wenger is going to end up in a "Director of Football" position and inserting a manager between him and a prospective #2 might be problematic.
