I'm going to indulge myself with a few comments since I started this thread and I've just read the whole lot! When I started this thread, I was furious and ready to push the figurative button that would send this lot to hell were such a thing available. The close proximity of a grandchild in Paris had a lot to do with that reaction. Fortunately the world is governed (in part at least) by people less hot-headed and more rational than me. Gandi said, "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth leads to world of blind people with no teeth"! So let's start with dialogue. I think that IS / Daesh actually ought to be given the opportunity to air their grievance in dialogue. I saw Canon Andrew White - the Vicar of Baghdad - on the BBC recently stating that he had invited IS to dine with him. His passion is for dialogue and 'dines' with Jew and Muslim alike. He told the reporter that he was not able to pursue the notion since their response was that if they came they would simply behead him. If that is their national declaration (as appears very likely) then that seems the equivalent of Hitler snubbing Chamberlain's 'Peace in out time' and should be the signal for the 'gloves off' that many on here are wishing for. In that context, it is also possible that The West and / or the UK /USA etc may need to apologise for some actions in the past. I am not a namby pamby appeaser but, taking a world view of justice, that is likely. The religious issue. Figures are interesting but perhaps less relevant to the discussion. Some on here are longing for the demise of all religions. Given that there are 2.2 billion people who call themselves Christians and 1.6 billion Muslims, don't get too excited by the possibility that religion is dying. What is more relevant is the maturity of the religion and it's interface with the modern world. A mate once made what I considered an astute observation. He said that 1000 years ago Christians were behaving in a pretty similar way to Daesh ie accept Christ or be killed. Sound familiar? As I think we commented in previous threads, can we wait that long for Islam to mature? Another common theme is a call for the Muslim community in Britain to be more pro-active in both dissociating from Daesh and demonstrating that they are taking active steps to prevent their young people from being radicalised. Did you know that every GP practice in the UK has to have a Safeguarding Lead that includes the prevention of radicalisation. Not quite sure how that might work out in practice but why not have such a lead in every mosque in the UK. We are suspicious that a fair proportion of the Muslim Community are more in support of Daesh than we would like. Steps like this would go some way to counter that criticism. How do we protect ourselves? The answer has to be any reasonable way that does not open the door to some sort of made fascist state with some form of dictatorship. I would hope that the Mother of Parliaments would have enough checks and balances to prevent such a thing. I also think we all need to be more vigilant. As the US guys showed in France a few months back, it takes a finite time to raise a gun and start shooting. I know two were trained but one as just an ordinary fella. If I'm going to die, I'd rather die fighting even if it's futile. No harm in being vigilant, calling the authorities if time but being prepared to act if that is at all possible. The SAS may be in Northolt but we are in the tube, on the buses etc. Generally it has been a good discussion apart from the inevitable minor spat that occurs in most threads. Keep safe everyone and for those with some faith, pray that our leaders get it right more often than they get it wrong. I'm sure those with no faith wish for the same thing and it is that mutual understanding, acceptance and respect that leads to the harmonious society that we want our children and grandchildren to live in.
In the context of an internet debate, just as dangerous, because you are right, everyone else is wrong, and you don't care how you respond to other posters, showing a level of intolerance that borders on zealot status. Glad you have decided to quit that line of debate, though I must point t out you started it for some unknown reason.
As a non religious person can someone please explain in layman's terms what is going on in the last few posts? Cheers.
I'm currently being turfed out of Portsmouth tiger tiger while vsiting family but Stan by the lot. Sadly. Think more people need to be shoty (I work in cirty so prime tarhet( before they re alis
Last few posts? Well RTID did a stunning post of clarity and measure that puts the rest of us to shame and you posted a picture of the proms (I think). [Best to skirt over the debate on the self-preservation that's inbuilt into all long standing religions (whether applied today or not).]
Stick 10mm rubber washers on all your families left or right footwear depending on the side of the fall The mirror will appear straight to the eye but you may have problems with the reflections Maybe useful but saves you taking the wall down?
And there inside lays the problem How we interpret the book Fast forward to today it's hard enough to understand a email or a idiot like me posting on a forum
After all of this should we all not form our own small army to combat terror? Come out as QPR against The ISIS Even offer them an arranged punch up? Seriously we are all tribal at football matches and I defy anyone who says we are not. We need a decent insulting set of chants to lure them to LR whereupon we will trap one of the scum and tear him or her apart live on Sky Better still Eat them Honestly they would **** themselves in the future just seeing a Rangers shirt
To a degree. But any interpretation will be severely hampered when it is limited to one verse out of context of the chapter in which it is found.
Ok , come on , which one of you flannels will be signing the French national anthem tonight ? I have every sympathy for France and hope they get some kind of justice and revenge , but i won't be , the duke of Wellington will be turning in his grave tonight ! Or is that a bit harsh ?
Harsh? No. It's just your opinion. If you go back far enough, just about everyone has been at war with everyone else! Should we hate Denmark, Norway and Sweden for the Viking invaders?! What about the Spanish and those Romans who caused so much pain for those of us who had to learn Latin (which I thoroughly enjoyed as it happens!).
I still struggle watching British and Irish lions players and fans singing each others anthems so am with you to a large extent! However the singing of that anthem has become an iconic memory of the weekend's events so people have seized upon it which, in the grand scheme of things, is not really a bad thing even if intrinsically it's not something that sits that easily with me. I would be interested to know what French people think of it...
Mate it's just a reaction to the atrocity. Most of us can't go out hunting bad guys so we make small gestures like that. Small tokens of defiance but if Daesh get their way, even such small tokens will likely lead to loss of life and limb no doubt.
I was tempted to stump up the £50 for the game tonight purely to go and show my support for the French, and would have joined in their national anthem with vigour and chanted 'Allez les Blues' with equal pleasure. Perhaps it would be different if the game was competitive.
