Not sure the rules will allow us to act in self interest, I think the way to do that would be to stall any talks at NATO by saying lets negotiate.
If we do that for long enough (shouldn't be a problem as any decisions take months anyway) it will all be settled and then we wouldn't want to stir things up again

Yep exactly. Or just claim the president was actually against democracy and that justified supporting a miltary coup. Which was the excuse in Egypt.

So, you solve the problem of the president being against democracy by taking it away altogether?

Perfect solution! That'll teach would be dictators!

I know, crazy isn't it. Same **** in Algeria back in the 90's. And the Egyptians went through a whole load of national turmoil to get rid of one military dictator... only for us to help install another one a few years later <doh> We really don't help democracy flourish just when it needs it the most. We like democracy only when it suits us.

Strange! It didn't seem that things were that bad over there, but there you go!

I'm reading that's it's some factions in the army who support some US based. ( surprise, surprise! ) cleric!?..

<laugh> no ****ing surprise at all. Now... I wonder if the media will put pressure on the U.S. over this point?

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hit out at what he called the "parallel structure" in his interview on CNN Turk - it's believed to be shorthand for the followers of Fethullah Gulen, a US-based Muslim cleric who Mr Erdgoan has accused in the past of leading coup attempts.

TBF US-based doesn't necessarily mean US supported, but it's ****ing dubious to say the least.

Continuing to read the military coup statement, the TRT announcer says Turkey's democratic and secular rule of law has been eroded by the current government, Reuters reports. The country is now run by a "peace council" that will ensure the safety of the population, the announcer adds. A new constitution will be prepared "as soon as possible".

<laugh> As predicted, we're taking over to protect democracy! What a load of bollox.

Yep! Usual crap. And you can bet the next 'democratically elected' president will be anything but that!

So was god on the side of the loyalist terrorists in NI or did you just forget to include them on your list?
Seems you forgot to include Israel also?

The world is full of lunacy at this time and keeping a lid on it might just have got out of hand with the military coup in Turkey, get in the fallout shelter and pray to your god!

It wasn't meant to be an inclusive list, just trying (and apparently failing, so apologies) to point out that loads of different people do loads of horrible things and use religion as an excuse, not coz the religion says you should do it.

As you say, what's going on in Turkey is scary and could well be the spark that sets off a whole load more ****!

Relax. Boris will know what to do. He's our foreign secretary now, let him deal with all this ****.

Bumbling Boris. Waited until he saw which way the coup went before commenting. Quelle surprise, Erdogan wins, so Bumbling Boris supports him <laugh>
