Not sure what your attendances are for reserve fixtures, but maybe it costs too much to have a team if they only get a handful of support, mind you i have only ever been to 1 friendly at Roker Park, Sunderland Vs Man U, Andrei Kanchelskis was just coming back from injury, and he was worth the ticket price alone, he tore us a new one that night, he was exceptional.

But that was the 1 problem (of many obviously) with the championship, you cant have a reserve team (or you couldnt when we were down there) so you have all the fringe players twiddling their thumbs for months.

and like others have said, who are you going to play in these friendlies, most teams, going all the way down to the unibond 2nd division, play every week when its season time, so just not sure who you will be able to play against in all honesty, in friendlies.

Think the only option I see is what someone suggested having a feeder club. Maybe one of the teams we are playing against in US

Hmm, im quite happy to trust their judgement on this one anyway. Both Pardew and Ashley want only the best from the reserves/academy/development squad, whether thats too build homegrown players to then sell on for profit or to promote them into the first team for the future...

All i remember from last season was that nearly all the games were behind closed doors and quite a few were called off, so maybe they can get better use from some friendlies. Although, i dont know who they could realy play against during a season that would be as easy to organise...

A feeder club sounds like a decent idea, but also makes it harder for your own team to check up on you. Works well for Man Utd who send tons of their players to Belgium over the years.

I think our reserves are a lot different to how they were years back when basically the reserves were just the last resort to the first team if you had too many injuries. It was just full of people who were never going to make the step up, whereas now its seems to be a great testing ground for young players. Local or bought from abroad.

Isn't there a contractual obligation to field a reserve team in the Premier League?

as Ashley has just forked out and done what most don't and arrange for the reserves to go to Holland for an 8 day tour i hardly think this means the end of the reserves and doesn't have any credence so in laymen's terms utter bollocks

    edit: made it clearer <ok>

the only way is if these teams arrange friendlies amongst themselves but in an article with pedro he mentions the reserves first game in august which is the start of the stiffs league??????

Peter Beardsley – not many clubs would have Reserve team tour

And last night Peter praised the club’s hierarchy for arranging an eight-day tour of Holland for his Reserve team squad.

We must say we were a little surprised, but also impressed that the club has arranged the tour of Holland for the youngsters, as well as the 10 day tour of America for the senior squad, which started yesterday.

With Joey Barton and Nile Ranger both unable to get visas for the American trip, they have been included in the Reserve side tour, and Joey will have a big impact on the youngsters in Holland.

The Reserves beat Berwick Rangers 2-1 in their first pre-season game at Shielfield Park, and this is what Peter said after that game:

“There are not many clubs who would send a reserve side on a tour like this to a foreign country and it will be brilliant for the players.”

“From my point of view I will be able to see the players in action on the pitch and also how they handle themselves in the down time. It will be a test of character.”

“I knew this game against Berwick would be a reasonable workout for our opener and I was not disappointed.”

“I was pleased with the performance of the players. It was never about the result because at this stage it is all about getting the fitness levels up.”

“We do not play our first competitive match until the end of August and these games are important.”

It’s an excellent move by Ashley and Llambias to sponsor the tour for the youngsters, because it also sends a message to the youngsters that they are a very important part of the future of the Tyneside club, and that’s so true.

One youngster we will be keeping an eye on this coming season is top French teenager Yven Moyo, who scored after 40 minutes last night, after he beat two defenders before nicely slotting home.

This lad is a left sided midfielder, and was a top youngster when Newcastle acquired him from French club Souchaux only last September.

Newcastle substitute Brandon Miele scored Newcastle’s second goal on 71 minutes with a good effort, and McLaren scored the sole Berwick goal on 74 minutes, after he had been fouled in in the box.

This talk is for next season though isnt it?

No one is really saying that not entering the reserve league means an end to brining young players through the ranks, theyre just looking at better ways to do that. If they really think theres a better way to give the kids experience and bring them through to the first team, then go for it.

I cant see how theyd do it but, nothings a definate yet. Theyre only looking into it.

I think it was because he didn't want reserve matches being played on the first team pitch.

I was thinking we should buy Boro. :D

Is this possible in English football? Barca's B team finished third in their second division last season (they're not allowed to be promoted). Would be handy if we could get hold of a League 1 or 2 club. Of course, Ashley would never do this, he can't run one club properly so I don't see how buying another would make any difference.

Its not possible, you can only own 1 club.

And Barca B/Real B can get promoted, but the 1st team has to get demoted for it to happen, so not very likely.
