I read something about us looking at Emile Heskey, but I can't see it happening (nor do I want it to happen).

Emile Heskey. Ha! Scraping the barrel? I think we'd have gone through the bottom of it if we bought him.

Also seen the link with Raul from earlier in the season being revived (Daily Mail, 2 May). I'd say that the chances of us lining up for the first game of next season with a strike force consisting of him and Emile Heskey are pretty remote. Their combined age would be 69!

What a brilliant thought Raul and Heskey. Hold on, has anyone mentioned this dynamic pairing to Steve Kean?

We've been regularly linked with striker Burak Yilmaz (26) who has scored a whack of goals with Turkish side Trabzonspor. He's pretty tall so that should tick one of Jol's boxes.

Bizarrely, was watching highlights not too long ago when I spotted a great turn - asked my friend who this guy was - he replied Heskey - I was shocked!

If he cost less than a £1m then maybe- he does go through a patch of form occasionally when he is handy enough- most of the time he is poor though. Back-up for a major crisis at best.

Heskey is out of contract this summer, so there would be no fee.

However unless he was very realistic about his wage demands and role in the team, I would not consider Heskey. Raul may be a possibility if he wants a stint playing in London, but I imagine QPR/West Ham would shovel much more wages than we would. I'd be inclined to say no to both Heskey and Raul, really.

Oh please no not Heskey. The guy can't get in a poor Villa team without their best striker so how would he get in ours? I'd take Sa and Trotta over him any day.

If we buy Heskey, won't he lose his pension benefits?

I actually think Heskey is better than he's often portrayed. He works hard for the team, but he's never - with one or two seasons exception - been a big goalscorer. He would fit well in a Roy Hodgson side, I don't know if he would fit in a Martin Jol one. As I said, he's not what I'm hoping for.

Raul was one of my favourite overseas players 15 or so years ago, but I have my doubts that he would add a lot to us now.

I would absolutely hate to sign Heskey. He has scored 9 league goals in 90 league games for Villa. Arsenal's centre back Vermaelen has 13 league goals in 66 league games. If a centre back can make him look poor, and it's only worse he will get, not better then I don't want him, even if he is free. It's reducing the average age we're supposed to be doing anyway not increasing it.

I agree. And the need to rejuvinate the squad doesn't work for Raul, either.

This sums up the Heskey situation, I think. There is no role for Heskey in the team Jol is building.

However, I feel there would be a role for Raul. This is a man who played in a hugely successful, highly attractive Madrid team and he'd be a great veteran to slot into our changing team. Still very unlikely to happen, but I think personal reasons (i.e. he wouldn't want to come here) would be why it doesn't happen, rather than footballing reasons.

As an aside, of the teams (possibly) going down the players I'd like to look at are Steven Fletcher, Matt Jarvis & Stuart Holden. I certainly wouldn't look at any defenders (Dann & Johnson, the hot signings last year, have now been relegated twice in a row...). But those players are young, skilled and could fit the way we play. However, I would think they are the three players every other mid-table club would target.

This http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...l-health-of-the-Premier-League-laid-bare.html makes interesting viewing. If I'm reading the different figures correctly, it puts us more or less mid-table on the financial side of things (it's year old data, admittedly), so there's no reason to think we couldn't compete for some of those players. Certainly, it seems to suggest we're closer to some of the bigger middling clubs financially than I thought we were. As long as we're competing with the likes of Villa, Sunderland, etc rather than the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, etc for players, we've got a decent shout of getting some of our targets.

    I'd agree with that, Captain.

But the reason I said that is to highlight that it's easy to highlight the quality players in the teams that went down, but every team in our position will do that too. Matt Jarvis, for instance, is likely to be in high demand and managers like Martin O'Neill have a reputation for paying massively inflated wages to these types of players.

I think targeting someone like Holden is a much better idea, I think he'd be a very good signing.

Interesting figures there CM. It's our income that needs to increase if we're to compete higher up the table, so we really need that planning application to go through. The debt figure always gives me the jitters whenever I see it, particularly as it's second only to Man Utd.
