I agree mate but surely there is a lot more to get worked up about then just a simple statement of ambition and intent from our owner!
We may well do it next season, who knows and I expect as supporters deep down we will be thinking, I reckon this will be our season, as we do every single season!! But it's the same rhetoric year after year, when we have a small squad, we've relied on loads of loans and are currently in a relegation battle I don't want to be hearing the same again PL at the earliest opportunity. Yes we all want to get to the PL, and this has to echo from the top down, but PL at the earliest opportunity has been to our detriment IMO since ME has been here, as it has meant managers have made short term decisions and been a bit rash. I don't think Mick will do this as Mick is the opposite of rash but still I don't want to hear it. I want to hear that ME is still committed to the club and ambitious for us to get to and stay in the PL but I'd prefer him not to put that kind of pressure on our manager or raise expectations given what has gone before and where we are atm.
You didn't have any optimism at the start of this season!! And if I recall correctly you were getting your knickers in a twist last season because you wanted to see a 5 year plan!!! Standard JWM lol
PTC I kind of see where you're coming from but you would have thought by now that our esteemed owner will have learned from his mistakes! For one thing we now have a management team that ME can now trust to spend his millions and not waste it all on garbage! The whole problem has been that Magilton and Keane spunked his cash and made some god awful mistakes (well documented so we wont go into all the details) and Jewell unfortunately found himself to be well out of his depth. In Mick and Terry we have a different proposition all together and I truly believe that in the Summer Marcus will allow Mick the funds that will be necessary to compete in the transfer market. I'm not saying that we will get promoted next year but I feel that after the diabolical and abysmal season we have just been through, many of the mistakes and shortcomings will be addressed.
Of course as fans we will be optimistic and the signs are positive, we've got a manager who's got one of the best records in this division and has turned our season around. But he's got alot of work to do over the summer, so it's hard to judge and that's if we stay up. Like I say we've had playoff form for the past 3 seasons in the 2nd half!! I'd be happy to have a season next year building a team in the Championship ready to challenge for promotion in the future years and stay there. If we manage that in a season but I don't want to see a team put together overnight like how QPR have done, I want to see the team moulded together!! Was it not so much more satisfying how we got to the PL last time around??
Because Jewell was in charge and we did next to nothing in the transfer market! Yes of course I want a coherent plan for the club but I also want promotion tomorrow not in 5 years time!
Just to clarify things. Like JWM, my heart wants us to get to the PL, even it means coming back down and gaining the advantage of the parachute payments I hate so much. It would be good to see some sort of success after ten dreary years. On the other hand my head says we should make a five year plan and build something solid and sustainable. Confused, because I am
I think most of us would be happy with either scenario San Diego, so not all that confusing!! With the latter, if Mick stays and gets the appropriate financial backing, I don’t think he’ll need five years. Even with a spell of building and moulding etc in the Championship you can still come back down easily enough, so if we’re going to yo-yo a bit we might as well start doing it sooner rather than later.
No sorry it wasn't SD, I think it was more of a general comment after reading your post!! As per usual I got a bit carried away!!
True but I think that is what annoyed me about the statement, ME hasn't appeared to have learnt from his mistakes, he was basically saying again PL at the first opportunity!! It just struck me as more of the same. I don't think Mick will be as easily swayed by this message though, it just annoyed me that it seemed pretty short termist.
The problem seems to be though not many clubs do the yo yo thing very well, alot of them seriously struggle!! Most clubs who come down seem to go through a major rebuild and often one that's not successful!!
Things change so fast in football nowadays that a five year plan isn't guaranteed to be seen through to the end either
That’s right, there are teams that come down and fade into oblivion, frequently because they’ve over stretched themselves in a desperate effort to stay up. Then there are the ones that have yo-yoed (as in gone up, come back down, gone back up within two seasons, then come back down) and haven’t managed to replicate it, then there are the yo-yos that having bumped up and down a once or twice have stayed up there for a serious spell: WBA now, Charlton under Curbs, Bolton under Big Sam and so on. Mick and TC are the sort of team that can achieve the third sort (see Wolves), especially if the MEG backing is joined by yo-yo parachute money. And always assuming we actually stay up this season!!
Can you imagine Blackburn making a five year plan. I don't think they know what's going to happen in the next five weeks!!!
Five year plan my arse............... we are going up next season.................you mark my words....
