Redmond senior has to be first choice amongst employed managers in the premier league. Marco Silva has already shown himself to be ruthlessly ambitious and they’re shaping up for a good season next year. Anyway, we’ll have a bad run in January 2020 and some will want Ralph out before he actually goes anywhere.
I got the feeling that our motives were not exactly 100% altruistic. We didn't exactly push Lambert out of the door. But I think that we could have convinced him to stay had we truly wanted to. I sometimes think that maybe Lambert was deep down actually hoping we would do that. But you're right that we turned down offers from other clubs for more money, and I suspect that Lambert came up in the Lallana discussions and was an unspoken part of that deal. So the club did go out of its way to help Lambert get something cool out of it. But I don't think it was the case that Liverpool called us up asking for Lambert and we felt duty bound to let him go. Of course I wasn't there, so this is all conjecture on my part. But I just remember an interview with Lambert after he moved to Liverpool and someone asked him about Southampton and he said "It could have been.... different." and seemed to get a little choked up.
First rule of scouserism. Never pass up the chance for a good cry, especially if it's self-pitying. Don't get me wrong. I loved Rickie, and wished he'd stayed, but the ability for a good blub is rarely far away from a scouser in my experience!
Yep you mentioned in another thread about walking on water. Rickie can and i won't hear any different
I recall Rickie being quite heavy-legged that last season with us, and I doubt he would have played every game the following season. I`m glad he got his swansong at Liverpool, albeit it was a bit of a cameo role, and we can reminisce in what he brought to our club at his best.
I'm with you Billy, It's essentially the same conversation and I struggle to work out which one I've been reading half the time!
I know which ones which, because I refuse to go on the other thread, let alone even contemplate any signings until close season is well upon us. And even then it will be a barren wasteland of a long wait, so anyone counting the days down is going to be ****ting the bed as the middle of summer passes by. Whereas this thread seems quite normal, which loan players will come back and be given a chance? Which youngster will break through? Who will Wesley piss off next? All valid questions!
As if. Very few players come in and make the impact that Rickie did, and I don't just mean his talents as a footballer. We collectively fell in love with him, and a lot of that is because of that totally open warm approach that is is characteristic of many scousers. There are lots of characteristics of scousers that I love, and I was very sad to move away from Liverpool after ten years there when a job move made it necessary. Rickie is archetypal scouse. There's a naive rascally quality to him that is so typical of people I know. That 'heart on your sleeve' thing is also very endearing - but it does lead to them enjoying a good blub - and SRL was no exception. Criticism? Never. He is on my list of great Saints I have worshipped. And the list is short.
I bet I`m not the only fan who has fantasised that they were playing for another club, then had the opportunity late in their career to come home to the club they supported as a boy. I`ve scored the winner against the skates in the FA cup final for Saints, and the winner at Ibrox to clinch the league for the Dons. I`m a bit of a legend, I suppose.
