Rio Ferdinand‏@rioferdy5 "Swansea probably kept the ball better than any english team but had no players in our squad. Leon britton was the xavi of the PL last year!" He was talking on England, neveroffside! ............
Nope. Martinez was bombed out for two reasons. One, because Jackett simply didn't like or trust him (can't fault him there), and secondly because he was, to be frank, not much cop anymore. You can all feel free to praise Martinez though. I guess some people just have less pride than others.
Who said anything about going Barcelona style? Christ, Martinez didn't play Barcelona style. The possession based way came in with Rodgers. This is basic stuff mun. Martinez was tasked to provide "attractive attacking football". Barcelona weren't even mentioned.
That's ridiculous Lone, I was as gutted as anyone when he did what he did, but I've moved on, and Dai is right, we are where we are because of Martinez legacy, which even Huw Jenkins has guarded carefully, so don't understand your bitterness too Martinez now. Hell we have had 3 managers since Martinez, and your still bitter!!.....................
Think you are being a little bitter there lone rangel, he did what every other manager does when leaving a club, we left the door open for them to take scotland, something we have learned from. Looking at the way jackett had us playing and compare that to Martinez and there is a distinct difference. To say that we only played possession football under Brendan is absurd, we played the same way under Martinez and Sousa, Brendan tweaked it further and found a good balance, that is what Brendan did. We were already playing that way when he came.
Wasn't it, well my memory is clearly better than yours, think you need to get the time scale in your mind right, and as I'm the king of cut and Past according to Knackered, I'll have no problem providing media and fans comments reflecting our continental Spanish style under Martinez, Rodgers did very little other than keep things ticking over, and give us some fire power up front (Borini, Siggy, Sinclair)...............
Saying that we played the same style of football under Martinez as we did under Rodgers is like saying that Man City & Everton play in the same colour shirts. They may both be blue, but they're not the same. There was as big a difference between the way we played under Martinez and Rodgers as the was in the way we played under Martinez and Jackett (who was never as rigid about the long ball as the chimps claim). There was nothing like the emphasis on ball retention almost at the cost of everything else with Martinez in charge. It's why we were always leaky at the back and why we'd never have got out of the Championship with him in charge. Rodgers style of play had more in common with Sousas.
Phil, disagree with the last bit. Brendan did a lot for us. Whilst we already played the way we did, we couldn't defend for ****. Buck improved this massively, and also bolstered our attack no end. Buck improved us by 50%, and that 50% got us to the promised land.
No doubt you will. I'm assuming this would be the same media that Rodgers regularly castigated as "lazy". And you could probably find fans comments about all sorts of things, each more witless than the last.
without martinez influence we would be in the lower league somewhere now and not where we are..top man that every other manager admires. Brendan inherited a good team to start with and did not have to do much to improve the team, martinez started it all off and sousa sorted our defence out and Brendan got all the glory for what his previous managers installed.....Brendan had his good points but he also made a lot of mistakes that nearly cost us staying in the premiership too.......no malice towards any of our past managers and my loyalty is with Mr Laudrup now for as long as he stays and then it will be on to someone else when he leaves, We have improved year in year out and i hope we can improve even better under Mr Laudrup and im sure we will.....and it all started with martinez and his introduction of spanish football into our game......we have never looked back since....
read into it what you want vetch, there was no dig meant by me, as always, if that's what you look for, that's what you'll find. And don't be condesending with the 'there's a good boy', it doesn't become you. No need to run to swamp, 'I'm a big boy' and can look after myself.
Ash I wish to correct you here, Sousa gave us our defencive edge! Lone you seem to have gone of the point, Our possession game was here with Martinez, we where just too offencive, Sousa went the other way, far too defencive, Rodgers simply struck the balance and added fire power up front, and you'll see that our boys will carry on with our Spanish style of footy, that was instituted by Martinez this season too under Laudrup, but we will reflect a more Martinez offencive game, without the frailties at the back!................... PS: Anyone watch the Euro final? Silly question I know, but I think this Spanish side eclipse the Brazil of the 70's!...............
I watched it Phil, that's what would happen to Cardiff if we played them tomorrow. Spain were awesome, a pleasure to watch.
To some extent I agree with this, but your shifting the goal posts, you originally tried to say that our passing game was down to our board, which is ridiculous! and your trying to water down where it all started with miner adjustments from subsequent managers, come on Lone, your bitterness regarding Martinez is clouding your judgement! Same issue with ORLANDI..................
