I agree. England fans want the team to win every game of course, but there used to be simple friendlies in which managers could experiment. It's harder when there are points on the table....

Lets face it, if it isn't the FA introducing extra games for clubs its FIFA starting new tournaments. They may be making extra cash now but in the end it will drive people away because it all gets so stagnant. Internationally you have the Euros and the World Cup. Why then would you need a Nations Cup? Seems to me most sports are doing this sort of thing now.

    LABOUR SOLVE THE MIGRANT PROBLEM.

More than 62,000 migrants will be granted asylum and allowed to stay in Britain after Sir Keir Starmer scrapped the Rwanda scheme, experts have revealed.

The Refugee Council predicted 62,801 people could be recognised as refugees and waved through the system, as Labour bids to halve the current backlog.

But last night Shadow Home Secretary James Cleverly said that Labour had simply " thrown the doors open...instead of doing what is necessary to stop the dangerous channel crossings.

FIFA for the World Club Cup. The world club championship was once a single game between the champions of Europe and of South America, now expanded to a 32 team tournament once every 4 years.

EUFA for the expanded Champions League, up from 32 clubs to 36, with an initial group stage in which each club will play 8 matches instead of 6. Teams finishing 9th to 24th will then have to go through a knock-out phase to join the top 8 in the final knock-out stage of 16 clubs, home and away.

And Plym, should an Afghan man who fought with British Forces against the Taliban (or an Afghan woman who's been agitating for women to have the right to education) , but has had to come to the UK illegally, be entitled to claim asylum or not? Because under the previous government, the very fact they'd come illegally precluded them from even making an asylum application, even though there is no "safe" means for them to do so from outside the UK. To return them to Afghanistan would mean certain imprisonment and quite possibly death. I'm not saying all that come here have claims that strong, but some do and in applying such an arbitrary and inflexible rule, the previous Government caused a significant part of the problem themselves.

"scrapped the Rwanda scheme" = That would be the one that never got a single person exported and cost best part of a billion.

"could be recognised as refugees" = note the word could and not the word would. I predict they may not find life on Mars.

James Cleverly said labour had "thrown the doors open". = This was the Tory party would solved the problem of illegal immigration. Oh hang on..........

    Same old same old.

Well he was most people’s outstanding English candidate I think.

There has been internal strife at Newcastle but he may well not have been interested. It’s a big club with a big budget and now back where it belongs at Champions League level.

Why would anyone who is even halfway sane want to throw themselves into the England Manager job? It has to be one of the most thankless jobs anywhere and the abuse that goes with it is beyond belief.

Unless you win something of course, in which case the knighthood’s in the bag.

I imagine anyone who gets close to the top of the football manager pile is not short of self-confidence…..

It now seems certain that the biggest tax increase in next week’s budget will be an increase and expansion of Employers’ National Insurance contributions.

Taken together with strengthened employee rights, this will act as a deterrent to recruitment. On the positive side, if you view it that way, it will make investment to reduce workforce requirements more attractive. That’s good for Britain’s competitiveness but bad for those who lose their jobs or are unable to find new ones.

I gather the money will be ring fenced for the NHS. The government has said there will be no new money for the NHS without corresponding reforms. This new money must be put into physical assets (like the half-built emergency unit at Derriford) because money just tipped into the NHS without focus just disappears without trace.

The Labour government is of course keen to tax anyone and everyone who doesn’t wear a flat cap to work until the pips squeak.

Perhaps they should start at the Unite union.

The twelve year scandal of the Birmingham hotel and conference centre the union built with members’ money has now ended up with the Serious Fraud Office.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the figures before but they are spectacular.

The original estimate on which the Union entered the deal was £7m. The final cost was £112m. On completion, the building was valued at £29m.

It puts HS2 in the shade doesn’t it?

You don't need it you are just being greedy. Put a bleddy jumper on and harden up. I have said this before but my household gave theirs away to those that actually might have needed it more. I suspect your household collectively get a bigger monthly income than mine does and yet we manage quite comfortably on ours.

It was ludicrous to give it to everyone but it’s swung far too far the other way now. As Martin Lewis said, there were far better options e.g. to limit it to those living in houses in council tax bands A to C (or whatever). Simple and more likely to catch virtually all the needy without complicated hurdles to jump through.

I didn’t apply for it but they gave it to me anyway. I didn’t need it and I was a fixed price tariff through the worst of it.

On the other hand, I didn’t apply for a freezing of Income Tax bands until 2028 either and it looks as though that’ll now extend to 2030. My state pension may be triple locked but my others weren’t during a period when inflation was in double digits.

I can’t say I felt any duty to give it back and that’ll be even more unlikely if this lot **** up my ability to pass my very hard won if modest estate to my family.

But that's the point notdistant. I get that some people need a helping hand financially I really do. What I can't take is that loads and loads of those that don't bellyache about losing something they never needed in the first place. There are plenty who don't spend one cent of it, or rather didn't, on heating their homes. They used it to book a holiday or buy their Christmas presents. If not that then something similar. If pensioners have disability then they can claim Attendance Allowance. At the lower end that is worth over £3k per year. If they get it it isn't means tested, isn't taxed and doesn't count as income when claiming anything else. I would suggest that is well enough to heat their home in the winter.

I hope those pensioners that can claim additional benefits, and thereby get their fuel allowance, do so.

I have no sympathy with those that can work but don’t but pensioners can’t do much save themselves and so there’s no disgrace in claiming whatever they legally can.

Watch out though to see whether the budget adds Employers National Insurance to employers’ pension contributions. If it does, that will be a big disincentive for employees to pay decent amounts into their workers private pensions. You and I won’t be around to see it but in four decades or so, there are going to be a lot of cold and hungry pensioners who the government will either have to turn their backs on or subsidise. It can’t be right to create that long term crisis for short term political benefit.

I maybe should have added that Attendance Allowance does not qualify you for a fuel allowance. You still have to be claiming other benefits on top of that. I don't have a problem with people claiming what they are entitled to claim as you say legally. I do though have a problem with an allowance being given out willy nilly to all and sundry on the excuse they "need" it to survive a winter. Simply they don't in a huge number of cases. You would think they were being robbed by the extent of the outcry.
