Damn it, oldfrenchhorn beat me to the GK position in the Not 606 All Stars!!

I have always been taller than average (currently at 6ft3, although I seem to have grown ever so slightly over the past year or so. Weird, considering I am 24) so when I was at school I was always placed at centre back or goalkeeper. Always wanted to be a winger when I was a kid, but as I got older, appreciated that I was better suited to defence.

Up until last year, I was playing 5-a-side every week which was great. We were totally inept to begin with, but after about 4 months we started to get good! Was really good to actually see us progress. However, I managed to break my hand and two fingers one game which required 3 months out injured. Never got back into again which was a shame.

As for other sports, I went to Watford Grammar so didn't get the opportunity to play football. Was either cricket, rugby or hockey. I seem to have a natural ability to hit things hard with sticks. Hockey was the obvious choice. Loved playing it so much, and it is one of my biggest regrets that I didn't carry it on at uni. I went to the best sports uni in the country but only in my last year did I make use of the facilities. And even that was to just play football every Sunday with friends.

I've always felt my sporting ability has been wasted! I reckon I could have been really good at something!

    Cheers..looks like a good forum.

Just don't let that annoying Garry come across.

I'm all for fans having their opinons but 5 threads with one word saying the same sort of thing gets pretty dull.

BBW.....I am more than happy to let you have the keepers jersey. I have suffered rather too many injuries keeping players at bay. I will take on a more gentle role somewhere else.

Not to sure what it must be like kicking one of these lightweight balloon type balls around. ;)

Norway and Leo, I did a bit of research and this site seems the best:

    http://www.chess.com/ (pretty straightforward!)

Making a profile is really easy, you can add friends to a list or play other people online, it's pretty good <ok>

If anyone fancies a game, would be up for it anytime?

This week alone I will be playing golf, football, badminton and squash... and am trying to be persuaded into doing a sponsored spin (the cycling) on saturday!! Also like tennis, swimming and thinking about taking cricket back up!

As for watching, I also like rugby union, athletics, cycling.... Hmmm, Victoria Pendleton :)

BBW - you should find some 5-a-side somewhere...or keep playing something. There are plenty of local teams of varying sports. Keep it up now, and you'll appreciate it when you're older :)

Sage advice from one who didn't take it herself! (but knows a lot of people who did) ;)

Let me have a look at it and get back to you - but my previous warning applies _ I lost my grandmaster status 59 years ago :)

As we consider these topics might we take a moment to say "Chapeau" to Wouter Waylandt who sadly passed away following a crash on the Giro d'Italia yesterday. When our sports heros cross the line we expect them to come back. Accidents of this nature are thankfully rare in cycling these days.
Perhaps a moment of reflection for Wouter, his family and the cycling fraternity.

I see Wouters team have withdrawn today - must be really hard for them, Tyler Farrar and the rest of the riders. In these circumstances the races continues, as with Casartelli in TDF in 1995.
    Tough times.

It is awful isn't it. I can't imagine what it must be like for everyone associated with him. Cycling has always been a dangerous sport, but you never expect someone to actually die.

I have been to the Simpson memorial near the summit of Mont Ventoux and remember his death. If you go back through the history of the TDF in the early days the riders would complain that the route setters were out to kill them.

Unfortunately there is still far too much drug abuse in the sport, but then I think I would have always needed something to keep me on a bike for three weeks.

I have signed up to the site but not had a chance to experiment yet - so will do that before I embarrass myself.
