the game rules have moved on. box kicking is now utterly pointless.

the 50 to 22 rule is massive for sides who can kick accurately and it in effect is a powerful kick for position game style is now possible.

about the only things I've seen from England is the maul. the most basic thing you can do in theory.

I feared Ireland were going to put 50 points on us.

we've got to go there and take it cos if Scotland don't beat them it's a grans slam for them

Even though a much better performance from England today ( brainless tackle ),I still think them and LFC are conspiring to ruin my weekends.

    free weekends.

I hate cheap shotters. there was at least 3 by England on sexton I think.

it's a disease in rugby now where people are trying to clip the head and get away with it.

today it was a very clear knock on and zero need to even go in but because England were all fired up or whatever he stepped into the "tackle" then turned the elbow in to offer a nice juicy head contact. zero effort to wrap etc.

there's a huge undertone of resistance to head injury rules in the game and honestly nothing short of a massive payout now will reinforce this.

I've seen refs go out of their way to avoid reds before today. I've seen massive dismissal of the entire issue in the southern hemisphere.

someone nearly has to bankrupt a national union for this to start to change again.

anyway. England were lucky the Irish were out of their heads with emotion and threw the ball on the ground about 6 times first half to keep them in it.

Ireland just about played into England hands several times the issue was England had nothing much to offer like the Italy game bar mauling and tackling. Once Ireland got field position they didn't eventually score but they were there for the taking by a better side. they were brain farting through that game.

i think furlong made about 4? offloads to the floor first half.

Two races in, two 1 & 2 for Red Bull... looking like it's going to be a dominant / boring season.

Shining light; Alonso in the Aston Martin. Really hoping he can be best of the rest. Get harsh penalty today potentially costing him third and his 100th podium, hopefully it rightly gets overturned. Even Russell and Toto said it was harsh and Alonso/Aston deserve that third place.

WTF is happening at McLaren...? Think Zak Brown needs to go. Lando needs a move next season too.

the continued resistance to the new rules of rugby by people and pundits is getting stronger.

people need to play interviews with players with dementia before any chats on these rules imo.

this six nations has a serious trend of inconsistent refereeing and a trend of players going for snide headshots they can get away with.

we saw players dive in head first and get yellows around rucks. we saw several no wrap tackles not get punished and some refs actively talk through incidents looking for any means to get the offender off.

I have personally seen 4 or 5 pretty clear turn the shoulder into the oncoming player type headshots and the only one punished with red was England.

there seems to be an attempt to say if you hit the person in the chest or have it rise up you are OK. we got red as it was right of thr head.

but you are not protecting yourself turning a shoulder in. coaches are actively coaching this imo. it's very clear to me that if an opponents head is there certain teams are going at them with intent.

At least they haven't made Rugby a no-contact sport yet.

RU is finished as the lawsuits will bankrupt it and the same players who are pursuing the lawsuits are the ones who wanted pro Rugby and that has led to to this constant bigger , quicker and higher tackling technique supposedly to wrap up the ball player .
As for blatant head hunting see Western Samoa in one of the early world cups.

they cannot stop the law suits and the thing is they can try resolve certain parts but when a guy lashes in full tilt into a tackler carrying the ball the impact is still massive.

but without that it isn't RU as there has always bee "big" hits but players are quicker and much bigger and because of professionalism careers go on much longer than the amateur days

yeah the guys diving in low chopping lads at the knees is as worrying as head on impacts.

I actually think the rules as they stand drive this quick broken field rugby.

rucks are not really contested and slowed down so you don't see a pule of writhing muddy rugger buggers feeling each other up while pretending to be after a ball any more. rucks are an orchestra now of guys clearing out and big hits coming midfield with guys bashing up the middle.

15 man rugby is almost inevitably a concussion fest.

rugby 7s seems to be the place this sport will end up, smaller guys covering more space.

Ah the good old days of clearing the ruck by dint of the judicious use of boot and stud

and sometimes the not so judicious usage "stamp and twist" .

England have had a problem with discipline for about a decade now.

We seem to give away more stupid penalties (and get yellows, reds) than any other team. No one has addressed it and it costs games.

A lot less "dangerous" to people's heads though.

a lot of mud and blood

err the amount of head injuries plus the blood is why they clamped down on it .

Its more of a contusion for a kicking than a high impact concussive force though.

If you want to have 20 lads in a ruck pounding each other while backs watch on impatiently then its more about survival than seeing 20 stone men plough into each other at high speed time after time after time?

the current union rules encourage massive hits. if you only tackle a certain way round the hips you will lose ground and its a procession towards the line where the massive hits get more and more urgent. If you want to stop a charging player on the gain line you have to come up as fast off the ruck and hit them

I just don't see how rugby really resolves this issue. its as fundamental to the game as heading the ball is in footy, perhaps even more so.

rucking in the old days didn't involve kicking per se it was basically pushing prone players out of the ruck using the sole of the boot to move them . It could often in effect become a stamp and if done "well" (see old school NZ rucking) would speed up the game as it cleared the ruck allowing the ball to be released though with the defenders having the chance to win the ball which these days seems frowned on .

Oh yeah absolutely. pumping the legs furiously like you are running on a treadmill made of someone's back. you had to be a very tough **** to lay on the ball when studs were applied.

its a very sanitised thing when you see some lad run in and "form" a ruck over a team mate who rolls over and presents the ball. that guys head is down and completely exposed and usually totally uncontested from defending side

the biggest risk is the defender who has to release after tackle then get hands on ball before two attacking lads mow him down (again head is down here)

Quick ball is what they have and if you are not isolated now its almost a matter of a procession down the field to where it gets serious and then folk start hammering each other at the 22 or 5 yard.

if the scrum was removed from rugby and the lift was removed form the lineout the sport would be utterly changed as well. 20 stone props and 6' 10" second rows might become all back row type forwards charging about.
