Leeds is probably the highest regarded. Loughborough is fantastic for sport, got a very high bloke to female ratio though, for some people that's important <whistle> . Liverpool's probably the nicest city but I haven't been to any of them so that's a guess. Leeds ain't far from Newcastle so you can get to a few home games once the loans in. All good uni's there though so you probably can't go wrong whichever you choose. :D

Yeah Whitman's a pain. I only said him as I'm doing an essay on him now haha. Don't mind Joyce so much myself, he's definitely a struggle to comprehend though.

I am finishing my degree at Uni of L'pool right now. I have to say that if there is a city designed with students in mind, it is Liverpool. Everything is so close together so you don't need a car or bus pass. If you like football (which I'm assuming from your membership on this forum that you do), we have the best 'in-house' football leagues out of all the unis in the country (54 teams across 6 divisions for 11-a-side plus there are also 6-a-side leagues).

<laugh> I actually did, by the end of my first year I was spending pretty much all of my time in the local with coffee, cigarettes and poetry collections thinking I was some sort of free-thinking forgotten bohemian. Well, at least part of that has come true now that I live in Bohemia <diva>.

I like all three of them, but Poe and Whitman the most.

<laugh> Yeah I like the idea of it but when hearing it back and writing it down it sounds very pretentious and dick-ish <laugh>
Sod it, I'm not a traditional student, I stay in most of the time <laugh>

Yeah I'm a big fan of Poe. Mainly a fan of modernist writers and beat generation writers like. Kafka, Fitzgerald, some Woolf, Burroughs, Kerouac, Ginsberg etc. Plus, a lot of them have interesting lives so it's great to read about them on wikipedia <laugh>

Surprisingly I've never read any Kafka despite his name being plastered all over the city here in streets, hotels, cafes etc. Anything worth starting with?
I really like Thomas Hardy's Satires of Circumstance which I picked up by random choice once and ended up finding great. They're like a collection of situations in which he takes a sort of humorously sadistic outlook on people getting screwed over in different ways.

And yeah <laugh> it all sounds seriously pretentious when written down. I think it has a lot to do with the culture there though, I could spend all day having a read with a coffee in most places I've lived and not feel like a fraud or out of place but when I lived in Leeds there were always enough people staring at me weirdly for me to stick out like a sore thumb.

Couldnt tell you, I'm in a similar conundrum (provided I get the grades). I think of those, Loughborough's probably the best uni, dont know about the student life and all that for each place though.

Yeah quite surprised you haven't read any. Erm, he's got quite a lot of short stories, a lot unfinished, and 2 or so novels. I'd probably start with Metamorphosis, his most famous novella. That's what I read first. Easy reading short fiction.
Quite like Hardy, not read that though, sounds good, I'll have to look into it.

Yeah I know where you mean. Manchester's sort of half and half. A lot of places are quite studenty but there's some nice old (but expensive) little pubs in parts of town and the centre. You have to be looking for both parts to find them, really. Still easy to avoid, luckily. Just the bloody students tend to be all over the place. Luckily it's busy, easy to blend in!

Like everyone said, its all about the course which you are doing. Loughborough is great for sport, but otherwise its pretty standard. Leeds is well known for business. Liverpool I think it good for History and Art and I don't know about Glasgow.

There is 2 uni's at Leeds but from what my mate said, he had to get the train into Uni each day; which I can imagine being a pain in the arse. Just something you could make look into a bit further.

I also agree with Jesus was a Geordie. I'm from Newton Aycliffe (near Darlington) and a lot of my mates went to Newcastle, Northumbria and Leeds and a lot of them came back every weekend and then eventually moved home in the 2nd and 3rd year to save costs....but inevitably the majority of them didn't get up and travel to uni and ended up quitting.

I went to Preston (a bit of a ****hole, but I loved it) and you don't rely on anyone at all. I also like the fact that I went to somewhere without knowing anyone. It a completely new start and makes you a lot more independent, which in my eyes can only be a good thing.

I'm sure you'll make the right decision and just enjoy (but work hard) at the Uni which you go.

Loughborough's the best uni, Leeds is the best city. Might be a bit close to home for you though. I wouldn't dare go to Glasgow or Liverpool, I'd just be stood there like an idiot trying to understand what people were saying.

If you want to get stabbed with a screw driver because you look like a student, go to Leeds.

Only heard good things about Glasgow though, I think you'l enjoy any of them tbh.

Yeah, actually I remember, I've been told about the attacks on students in the past few weeks. The University is organising security for walks home because kids are attacking students on their way home even in broad daylight.
