'various councillors have finished the job' - the Council of whatever political persuasion neither own the buildings, nor let them go to rack and ruin and only get involved should there be a planning application for a change of use or demolition to be replaced by a new development or act in a last resort for their compulsory purchase should they deemed to be unsafe. They weren't respsonsible for the demise of the old Mail Buildings on Jameson Street after the HDM vacated the site for Blundells Corner Corner, nor the ABC/YEB buildings (not to mention the carbunkel of a building owned by British Rail which laid empty for over 20 years in front of Paragon Station) all of which made way for £150m of private investment that is St Stephens. Perhaps the derelict buildings on the original Mytongate may have been saved if they'd have been around now but from what I rememeber I don't recall too much furore about their demolition some decades ago. As for old buildings I would certainly say Hull with its unique Old Town has far more than most.
