O.K. What am I talking about ? They were invented by a civil engineer who later built the Mersey Tunnel. First patented in 1890 and officially used in Nottingham the following year.
No, sorry. A clue: They were first tested in Stanley Park in 1890. After the first official use in Nottingham the Birmingham Evening Post declared that the results were inconclusive. The first person to use them to good effect was a certain Fred Geary.
