Hi Stroller,

Saw this on a TV programme earlier in the week. Car burning on the inside of the track, race carried on oblivious, Purley grabbing marshalls fire extinguisher to put fire out, totally inadequate, and trying to turn car back over, absolutely horrific. Anyway, back to the quiz.............
 
I actually knew this one! They all declined honours. Churchill turned down Duke of London, Lessing declined a Damehood, and I can't recall what Russell said no to (not much in his life, I gather!)

It was a documentary on BBC4 - Grand Prix:The Killer Years. Incredible how lethal F1 used to be.

Re: Background info regarding "Consort" - Phillip was also quite partial to the "Missionary" position?

Had Philip of Greece any idea of what his role as consort to the Queen of England might entail?

"Well, if he didn't have a clear idea then he was an idiot. However, his uncle Louis Mountbatten was pushing for him to be much more with higher rank and power, and perhaps Philip was foolish enough to think that would happen. Obviously, it did not. (Nor did Queen Victoria give that sort of power to Prince Albert, by the way.)

By the way, Mountbatten is very interesting to read about in his own right. He is often considered to have been a naval hero during World War II and credited for getting some ships out of extreme peril. What is not that well known and almost never discussed is that Mountbatten's lack of experience and general competence put those ships in peril in the first place! Another nugget about Mountbatten is that he kept telling Prince Charles to go "sew his wild oats" and NOT marry the girl he truly loved and should have married early on -- Camilla Shand -- and Charles left for an extended trip with no word whatever to indicate to Camilla that he would very probably marry her when he returned. So Charles left, Camilla was "high and dry", and married Andrew Parker Bowles on the rebound. The reason Mountbatten stuck his nose into that business was his wish to have Charles marry Mountbatten's daughter and make Mountbatten the father of a future Queen Consort. Mountbatten was personally very charming, though."

That may well be true Willy, but its more or less the exact opposite of what I had in mind.......
 
OK, back to football...

Who is the only player to win the Premiership, the FA Cup, a Champions League medal, AND be relegated from the Premiership without ever going on to play in the Championship?
 
Having looked it up, Boswinga did indeed become the second player last season, but he's such a reprehensible individual I was clearly blocking him from my memory.....

Nevertheless - there's one other, so I'll award an honorary mention to Grinners, and award the next question to thefirst answer that matches my original one!

Feeling concerned for your well being I've just looked it using a different source....and you are right, Brooklands was the first venue for a Grand Prix in Britain, in 1926-7, its one and only time. But you were still one short of the set mate (well 2 with the revised total of 5......).

Good to remember that Wikipedia is fallible. As, apparently, am I. May have to retire from question setting.....apologies Stroller.
