Malaysia. Each of its States has a royal family and they rotate overall kingship. Not sure if this is swapped on a regular basis or when one of them dies.

Now I am surprised....because I got asked this once in a quiz...and trying to be ultra clever and thinking it was a trick...I said Brazil...because their flag shows the night sky on a globe...and I got it wrong....it was USA (that is my memory of it)...so have googled...and google says USA (so does the quiz site favourite of all good quizzers Sporcle).....so what trick am I missing....

What a good site that is Beth. I've wasted an hour or so there this afternoon. Really must get back to finishing off my accounts......

Which novel was inspired by the writer having previously translated Les Miserables from French into his own language - and him then wanting to write a sequel to it about his own country ?.

I may have misled by describing it as a sequel - it was meant as an equivalent to Hugo's work but based on characters and scenes from his homeland - Les Miserables was his inspiration for this.
