Spot on Beth; a small percentage of philologists suggest Welsh, or Hungarian Finnish and Icelandic may be as old as Basque, but the majority view is that Basque is indeed the oldest. It apparently predates the arrival of indo-European languages which arrived 8000 years or so ago. That's why I used the word 'reputed' in my question.I understood it was Welsh but how that is different to Cornish say I never understood, I would have guess Greek for obvious reason...not Latin, like olden- day French never spoken in the country..... both a language of law and central government.
But from GC description of the answer it has to be Basque
reputedly Denmark, although some go for the red dragon of Wales. This can't be right as Wales has never been a united self governing country.
[sits back and waits for Beth, my wife and the Swans to debate, safe in the knowledge that I'm nearer to Kiwi than you lot at the moment]
