Well it's bred into them since the wild west and then written into the Constitution. There's a lot more deaths across the US every day than you get in these tragic massacres but because it's not multiple deaths it's only reported locally.

Here are the facts, right from the sources:

The U.S. figure of 11,127 gun deaths comes from a report from the Center for Disease Control. Japan's gun deaths of 39 was provided by the National Police Agency of Japan; Germany: 381 gun deaths from Bundeskriminalamt (German FBI); Canada: 165 gun deaths from Statistics Canada, the governmental statistics agency; United Kingdom: 68 gun deaths, from the Centre for Crime and Justice studies in Britain; Australia: 65 gun deaths from the Australian Institute of Criminology; France: 255 gun deaths, from the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Norway is in the top ten countries in the world for amount of guns per head of population, the US is obviously top, half the rest are in the Middle East.

Isn't somewhere daft like Switzerland one of them as well? There's somewhere like that, that generally tries to be neutral that issues everybody with a gun during military service and they keep it afterwards in case they ever need to be drafted at short notice due to an invasion.

Tightening gun controls would be pretty much impossible in America. Obama has come under a lot of criticism from some for his apparent tightening of gun controls, when actually I believe he has been much more lenient than most republican presidents, even George W.

Ultimately, it is down to the constitution, which is a fantastic document - but I find it really hard to believe that "the founding fathers" had anything like the modern day usage of guns in mind. Arguments in the US tend to get a bit pointless when both sides start saying "the founding fathers would have done this...", but I really doubt they would have supported current legislature on guns.

Bizarrely, Switzerland is 4th, most of the top ten are countries who've had relatively recent wars, but Sweden and Finland are also in there(hunting is very popular in Scandinavia apparently).

    Hundreds of thousands?

Aren't there 250 million Americans?!?? "Hundreds of thousands" of them being law abiding doesn't sound like a particularly high proportion.... :D

Sadly, I don't think many Americans give enough of a **** about these massacres of innocent people and children to consider it anything other than a by-product of their more important rights.

That is, the right to own a gun.

Access is too easy, and the news coverage of these events also has a lot to answer for. For already twisted people, they make the gunmen into God-like figures with constant attention on the rolling news.

Quick and easy way to get famous if you're mental enough.

Everyone keeps going on about this being "typical America" with yet another massacre... has anyone actually read the article?

"Investigators were attempting to determine whether Johnson shot anyone beyond his initial target. All nine of the surviving victims could have been hit by the two police officers who shot at Johnson, officials said.

Several were likely hit by police bullets that ricocheted off large, anti-terror concrete flower pots stationed outside the Manhattan landmark, police said."

Putting a detonator to a nuclear weapon in every home doesn't mean everyone will use it, so shall we go ahead and have them installed?

Sounds like the bloke only shot his intended victim about 5 times. The police fired 15 rounds to stop one target in a crowded city area. Morons!
