Ta for the big sell Was going to go but I think i'll give it a miss now. cheers fella, nowt worse than a wasted afternoon.
Sunderland has: The only Olympic size swimming pool north of Manchester. Excellent beaches Great people. Newcastle has had enormous amounts of money invested in the city, but if you have a ride around the West end, Scotswood, or the Eastend, its still a rough old place
Has none mentioned the empire theatre? I hate it when people say its a ****e hole. The Bridges is better than many a city/town has to offer. I work in Durham and its an embarrassment, bar a pile of bricks up on Palace Green it has hardly anything.to offer. Hardly any bars only ONE club. only two screen cinema. yet its the tourist attraction of the north ?? Piss off. The amount of times I've been asked "is there a ......" here? And my honest answer is "the closest is Sunderland" Sunderland has some fantactic bars, restaurants state of the art cinema and the surrounding sunniside area is fantastic. Probably a hidden gem because its too far away from park lane. Herrington Country park is fantastic with Penshaw monument looking over it. The beaches are something 90% of the country would die for (not our fault the British climate is crap) Need I.mention the 6th most successful football club in England and one of the best sports venues in the land which is also transformed into one of the best live music venues in the country. Yes the main drag through the city centre needs a spruce up and im massively passed off with the missed opportunity at the Vaux and what they've gone and done. There's been a load of proposals over the years that have looked great but been knocked on the head most recently the fantastic looking bridge that was going to be built. The echo ran a special about doomed ventures not long back. Our city has no doubt suffered due to a weak council and money going to Gateshead/Newcastle. The council have shown some balls recently though over a proposed 25m government investment.
The University is an asset to the city, as a mature student I really enjoyed studying and taking my degree at Sunderland.
I've lived in the Durham area and worked in Durham for many years. It's a fantastic city but lacks quite a few amenities. Where as Sunderland for me is where I spent my ill spent youth.pubs night clubs and entertainment venues was without doubt the best place to be. We used to go to the match at 1200 lunch time and not come home until well sometimes Sunday evening.in all my years I think I have maybe been north of Gateshead on about a dozen time to the town.it never appealed to me. Sunderland has more to offer for me.
Haha yeah I should have mentioned that considering I studied for my degree there for 3 years. Its a great University. Yes its never going to have the history or prestige that Durham has but Sunderland is for real people from real families. Durham is mostly for toffee nosed privately educated walked through their Alevels Tory voting arseholes. Three A's at A level but not an ounce of common sense amongst them.
My brother got his first qualifications from Sunderland Poly, and his masters from Durham. Does that make him a real arsehole?
