Back on topic has anyone been to Duxford?
The skin of the SR71 is very odd indeed. Like stroking a really long black box of Swan Vesta.
    What blew me away was...

1- the small size of concord.
2- the big size of the B52... Utter beast...

Went quite a few years ago, brilliant place.

Best place to go for planes and stuff like that is the Smithsonian in Washington DC, so many incredible aircraft and such an amazing experience, iw oudl strongly recommend anyone to go if you're ever in DC

ages since I visited Duxford. Planning to do it this year, but a mate of mine who wants to go is waiting for a hip operation, so allowing for NHS delays, its likely to be next year. Best day is a flying legends weekend, but can be a let down if the good old British weather fails. The legends show tends to be WWII based, and its a pleasure to see a lot of US aircraft. Was opposite a Corsair when they fired it up, not quite as good as the sound of a merlin, but those radials do have a distinctive sound. Sally B, the only flying fortress in the UK, is due to appear on 13/14 September, but can we rely on the weather?

Wasn't Sally b the Memphis Belle in the film?
Sure it still has the livery.
Was the first time I saw a V1 rocket and great to see the restoration area too.

Think you could be right Albert. showing our age now, Memphis Belle was a long time ago. I was working close to the American Cemetery at Cambidge last week, so I wangled an hour there. Very impressed.
Grounds (even the car parks) were immaculate, design and layout all very carefully planned. Brings home the tragic loss of life of guys most of whom were late teens, early 20's
Makes you feel very humble when you walk around the grounds

Indeed mate. The mortality rate in terms of life expectancy within bomber command was only worse in the trenches of WW1. A true fact.

A few years ago I was working in Cardiff, and stayed in the guest room at a housing association scheme. I got chatting to the warden, and when she knew I was involved with air cadets, she told me a very sad story. Her mum only told her the truth shortly before she passed away, but the guy she assumed was her dad was actually her dads brother. Her real dad was the mid upper gunner in a lanc and was killed in a mission over Germany. Her mum was 6 months pregnant when he was killed. Se only had her dads name, but after hours of research I managed to track his story down. He was buried in Hamburg, and her son took her over to pay her respects to the dad she never knew. I have a gut feeling that there is a lot more to his story, and maybe when I retire I will try and find out more.

There must be thousands of moving stories like that still to come out. Whenever I meet an elderly person I treat them like they were a war hero because but for their sacrifice on the war and home front we'd all be in a different place now. The one place I NEED to visit is Normandy.

I did the Normandy beach head from Pegasus bridge to Utah beach in to 70's. Planning to do another visit next year with a mate whose never been, provided he gets his hip operation. Another mate did the Auschwitz trip this year, but I don't think I could face that one.
