I can't see the law passing to be honest. The internet is the basis of most businesses these days and will contribute more to the US economy than the music and movie industries, who are the biggest backers of SOPA. I think its a case of US politicians looking for financial backing from the big internet companies.

However I do think that the measures being taken, such as todays blackout, will put the additional pressure on the backers of SOPA to drop it for good.

Put it this way, for the bill not to pass people need at least 32 US senators to oppose it.

    They currently have 2...

Yeah this is a real disgrace. Even despite the obvious massive and ridiculous implications of these laws, the fundamental idea of web censorship goes against everything that Berners-Lee intended when he invented and released it to the world for free. These laws must not pass.

I wouldn't dare now though, I'd be in constant fear of the establishment and their multiple ways to **** me over.

The point of this IS to combat overseas 'piracy' too. They could at least take down the video and also potentially sue facebook/youtube/wherever you post the vid, so your account there wouldnt last long or, more likely, they'd just take away the ability to post vids/photos. Avatar pics could even be affected ffs, guessing thats not your own brand of strawberry syrup in your pic is it?

Also if the US goes through with this theres no reason we wouldn't follow suit. We don't have the most independantly minded government as it is (see terror laws etc.)

Unfortunately they're being bullied by the corporations that keep them in power, which is why this seems dangerously likely to happen.

www.xkcd.com <- best place I could think of for links.

Basically, there's a law going through the US congress that will make it illegal for any website to host anything vaguely related to copyright infringement. It will kill most online businesses because it will force them to self-censor their forums otherwise they could face prosecution.

Also, non-free internet = bad and if the Americans do it you can bet we will follow like their little lap-dog.

What I don't get is why the music industry has such a negative view on people posting music videos online. It's free advertising at the end of the day.

Also on SOPA, from what I have read it will barely impact on one of the biggest form of piracy which is torrenting. Plus the websites that are taken down will still be accessible via the websites ip address.

It irritates the hell out of me to see talentless, idiotic famous 'musicians', who earn an absolute **** load of money for doing essentially nothing, complaining about piracy taking money from artists. As a person who has had music released and made far less from it than I could live on, I have absolutely no problem with people taking and sharing it for their own enjoyment because that is the entire point, ethic and basis of music and the arts in general.
