    A real cult British sitcom.

Newhart series he owned a lodge/cabin type hotel, was hilarious at the time, his monologue type stuff is even funnier.

Terry and June was cringeworthy btw.

Indeed. It was a work of genius. To be able to combine dry humour, genuine wit, slapstick with moments of genuine tenderness & humanity, was an amazing achievement. I think it's head & shoulders above anything else in it's genre.

Why? Age doesn't mean anything, for example I was only 6 years old when The Office originally aired. Literally every show is on the internet nowadays.

I would agree with that statement, but most shows that gain wide-appeal are broad comedies that shamelessly chase ratings. The Big Bang Theory comes to mind. I am obviously generalizing, I'm not a comedy hipster. I ruddy loved Friends.

EDIT - I just think that The Office and Ricky have both been influential.

The age comment was double edged, firstly because you won't have seen many sitcoms and secondly because The Office appeals more to your generation, I accept some older people like it but I don't know many that do. Similarly with Friends.

And yes I know you can watch anything on the internet and Comedy Gold channels but honestly when was the last time you looked up some old comedy shows and then went youtubing them?

I just add I didn't mean any offence by referring to your age just thought that while it may be your best ever comedy, it lacks wide appeal.

How can we forget Monty Python, although not strictly a sitcom?

That was more of a show than a sitcom, I never really got it. I may go and look at it again though!

Beverley Hill Billies, Bilko, Mork and Mindy, The Odd Couple, Alf Garnett - all way back in the day. My top 3 Rising Damp, One Foot, Only Fools.

The TV stuff could be hit-and-miss, but when it was good, it was gut-achingly brilliant. Ministry of Silly Walks <laugh>

Have you looked back on them and do you still laugh?

I've got the dvd's of Rising Damp and I start laughing the minute Leonard Rossiter appears before he's even said anything. It never gets old, he was just so funny.

Some of the two Ronnies sketches make me howl as well .... four candles???

They just don't make them like they used to....<laugh>

The only fairly recent sitcom I've loved is Lead Balloon, never got the credit (or the time slot) it deserved imo.

Depends on your definition of 'recent'. Partridge, Ted, League of all pretty recent. All brilliant <Ok>

The Royle Family had some great lines but as a series, not so sure. Switching channels last Christmas caught a Mrs Brown's Boys, was very funny so looked out for another episode - it's a bit samey, seen one seen them all kind of thing.

You didn't cause any offence mate, you are quite right in many ways. The Office has become quite the cult favorite in recent years with students. Lead Balloon was a great sitcom that didn't get the attention it deserved. Peep Show's ratings have fallen dramatically. I wouldn't be surprised if Channel 4 dropped it.

    Nothing beats Spaced though.
