Exactly. A points system would merely give the usual suspects more leeway imo. They'd know they had a certain amount of "credit" to use up before they were in serious trouble. Only a good idea if you're one of those usual suspects imo.

Self Moderation is laudable but what when people step out of line? It has to be addressed because whether you like it or not, its always going to be an issue.

An agreed contingency plan is not only a worthwhile idea but a necessary one.

Roller this is a consultation process that encourages posters to come up with ideas to make the Board better.

I've come up with an idea and I've put it out there. So far some people seem warm to it and some not.

Its just an idea, nothing more.

The only thing that I have seen in this thread that in my opinion would make the forum better is self moderation and respect. All the other options discussed would seem to be encouraging the opposite.

Oh god...I've just read page 7 and now it seems I'm gonna have to go back and read 120-ish posts.

Before I do..No thanks to a points system. We have a system that works ok IMHO. Its not perfect but better than a points system.

I've found my way of ignoring and thats just to not post on certain topics where others do. works for me. Im sure there are plenty of other ways of self modding if you think about it?

Anyway..off for a read. may be some time. <ok>

Against I'm afraid Swords. The rules are clear, step out of line you get warned by the mods then banned. We are part of a community that has rules, and luckily wise men applying the rules, where personal responsibility and respect for fellow community member need not be delegated to yet more rules. The trick that Brix and Nuts have learned, which I see missing on other boards, is to remain active and energetic members of the board while not exercising their mod rights in a personal/punitive way. This is hugely impressive and we should cherish what we have - I would always rely on their judgement rather than an ever expanding rule book.

Just seen a great example of this - Brix closing the 'Good for him' thread at the perfect time, when discussion had run its fascinating course and the only way was downhill. Wisdom and experience in action.

Having just read through most of whats been posted i have more of a fel for whats been suggested.
there were a few posts that were baiting and having sly digs at various posters which i shall ignore.
I havent actually read any solid suggestions that I PERSONALLY BELIEVE will improve our board from what we have.
A few tweaks here & there and maybe a porn section for Norf, Cerny & others may help?
As for the over 18's sections. Personally I would like to believe that most of us ont post stuff like that?
I dont think that dividing the board will improve at all especially when some OT threads are great and others offensive. Would we lump them all in together?
Also, where am i gonna post my "I hate Tarbs" threads & who decides whether they are offensive or just an individuals right to a diffrent opinion? The point I'm getting at is that we all have diffrent opinions on players, teams, formations etc, so no one can actively and accurately determine what should go in what section. (even the Tarbs ones!!)
I'm happy to go with the majority on this but I really dont see that much needs or will change

    Just my opinion.

As I posted on Brix's 1st thread on this subject, we've got a great bunch of posters who make this board what it is and two Mods who are excellent at their job and allow the board to 'flow'. The OT threads are more common at quieter times in the season when there is little football news to keep us amused. I really don't see any changes that would improve what we have as sectioning OT threads would (IMO) 'fracture' the board and would be the first step in losing the community feel that makes us so strong.

One or two tweaks in the rules, particularly posting pics that may offend, are all that we really need to do at this stage. Perhaps an annual review along the lines of Brix's two threads would keep our finger on the pulse and the board would then develop at it's own pace and in line with the members' wishes...

not that I wish to be pedantic or anything but could you move the OT to the end of the title
I keep thinking its going to be a hot thread
probably only me but I would prefer it at the end

although I must admit I think all the threads are hot and should be read and CONTRIBUTED to by all.
    especially that joke one

Can we rename it the OT forum to represent the fact there are only a few rangers related threads?

Just to get the discussion going on that one, in the absence of a seperate forum for me the location would depend on why you want to mark the threads as OT and how rigid you're being on it. Presumably both our forums are doing it so that people who only want the football threads don't have to waste too much time.

The rule on our forum is that so people can avoid them if they want to an OT thread has to have either an OT in the name, OR a name that's clearly off topic. As it's only required if the name doesn't make it obvious we're not that bothered about whether it's at the beginning or the end. As the threads that haven't been marked OT have to have their name read for people to know it shouldn't make a difference.

The alternative is that you insist that every OT thread has it. In that case I'd say it's better to be at the start, it's a lot easier to spot the OT if it's at the start as it's always in the same place, if it's at the end it moves around a bit so it's more involved when you're looking to avoid them.

    ----------------------------------

For which way you go I think it depends on the mix of people wanting to read OT and those who don't. It's not going to be an awful lot of difference but I think we'd go for the way that requires the least amount of people to have to do extra work. (unless saving 10 people 1 minute took 1 person an extra hour or something daft like that)

The first one requires less work from the people making threads, and less from the mods in terms of changing thread names to add it when people have forgotten it (as they don't need to do it every time). It does though mean that those who want to avoid off topic threads have more to do as they have to read the names. It would obviously therefore be better to use this one if the minority are the ones who want to avoid OT.

The second one requires less work from the people wanting to avoid the OT threads as they just have to look down the left hand side to find the threads not starting OT. On the other hand it does mean users having to remember to put it in the title every time, or the mods having to rename the threads every time it's been forgotten. That's clearly more suited to a board where the majority want to avoid the OTs.

Like I say, there's not an awful lot of difference in the time taken for people either way, it's purely a courtesy to favour the majority as to which way you go.

Oh we'll it seems we have gone for adding OT in front of threads rather than a vote, real shame lads

Or people have temporarily done it that way out of courtesy now they realise there's a problem and it can be changed when a vote is down to decide on a permanent fix?
