I'm willing to bet there would be a long line of people willing to off scum like Bellfield, Allit, Napper, Black and all.....
The trouble is innocent people will die. Would people want to death penalty if one in twenty was wrongly killed. Its worse for them to stay in prison, surely that's what we all want? Having said that, if I came across one in the act, I'd do the same as the rest of you.
Not if this case is anything to go by its not. The reason its accepted that life in prison for a Charlie Chester or a child killer is a tough sentence is precisely because its known that they'll get a tough time on the inside. If that ceases to be the case then the sentence itself is, in a way, reduced.
When anyone commits crimes against the person they should forfeit their 'human rights' as they thought nothing of such rights of their victims or those of their families. Being shafted inside should be viewed as an occupational hazard for scum like bellend...
What gets me about these killers that they plead manslaughter what bollacks, they murdered someone & should get life or be put of death row, god forbid anything happens to my family I would take his life if I come across him, paying that geezer out is madness, it's just a shame the prisoners didn't finish the job.
Those opposed to the restoration of the death penalty always trot this one out, Flyer. They ignore the possibility that a death penalty for the most heinous crimes may act as a deterrent, thus potentially saving lives. They ignore the fact that nowadays our police are armed to the teeth and often act like Judge Dredd when they think a suspect is armed and shoot him dead on the spot. They ignore the fact that the guilt of many can be established beyond reasonable doubt. They ignore the fact that some incarcerated for murder are subsequently released to kill again. If there's fears about execution being inhumane, then letting someone rot in jail for the rest of their lives is arguably less humane than dangling them off the end of a rope. However, being a bit of a bastard myself (No! Really! goes the chorus) I'd be all for locking them up until they die in solitary confinement, but these days life is about 10 years with good behaviour, with TV and all the trimmings. Society needs a bit more of Spock's "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", if you ask me.
It's interesting, isn't it? If you accept a smattering of QPR supporters on this board to be a random yet reasonably representative sample of opinion, then I'd say there's a sizeable number in this country that would bring the death penalty back. But we are denied even a debate on the subject.
I don't think that the demographic of this board could be considered representative of the country as a whole Uber! You are right though, that a sizeable number in the country, possibly a majority, would support a return to the death penalty. I wouldn't.
The death penalty doesn't work in the US, does it? There's bugger all deterrent in it. Of course the pro folks always ignore innocent people being killed, you really want to kill innocent people to satisfy your blood lust? Just keep any child or multiple murderer in prison permanently.
One country in Europe retains the death penalty, Belarus, well known bastion of democracy and human rights. Anyone seriously want to go down that road?
A very predictable response, but somewhat surprised that it's come from you, Flyer, as often you put some thought into your contributions. Trotting out the US example is a popular counter from those opposed to the death penalty. But you cannot compare the UK to the US, a country with a significantly different culture in this respect to ours, although the Americanisation of our country is taking us closer each generation. Also, the habit of putting a murderer on death row for umpteen years seldom seems to help either society or the subject. How can you suggest that I'm ignoring innocent people being killed or, for that matter that I have a "blood lust" in need of satisfying? Perhaps you're ignoring the innocent people killed each year because the perpetrators know they're facing 10 years with good behaviour, free cannabis and the vote? Are you satisfied that murderers a freed to kill again? Are you happy that our police force are more likely to shoot to kill these days if they believe a suspect is armed - isn't that the death penalty before a trial? But, then again, you're in favour (as am I because we'll never see the restoration of the death penalty) of incarceration until they rot - that's not necessarily a "blood lust", but it's pretty sadistic when you give it some thought. They say a liberal is a conservative that hasn't been mugged yet. I note some on here have had the good grace to admit their point of view would change if they'd had a close connection to a victim of such slime as Milly Dowler's killer.
