Greenwich Mean Time is used in the winter and was previously used as the basis for working out other time zones (e.g. Central European Time is GMT +1). British Summer Time is used in Britain in the summer and as Milk said, is GMT +1. Putting the clocks ofrward and back is the switch between the two.
