John Wyndham's masterful book,"The Kraken Wakes" is based on such an eventuality. Excellent sci - fi read for those who don't know it.
The MP against it is Swansea West... why is he getting involved in Swansea East affairs whilst telling the otherwise to keep out of Gower affairs?! Politicians are in it for self glory, and stopping success elsewhere makes their own achievements look all the better. Remember that politician who stopped the bike race on Swansea Bay? He was all for it until the Lib Dems were in charge and carried on the idea. Two faced snake that he is, but now he is back in charge I wouldn't be suprised to see it come back on the agenda especially since there was televised interest for the event to become annual. It wasn't supposed to be a little there and back affair like other British beaches, it was a real race that would last hours... and when his party lost he council he suddenly changed tune saying the sand would be rutted, this is ofcourse sand that would be flattened out again after one single tide afterwards!!!!
