He's actually retired so it isn't the same. It needs a high-profile player to come out whilst still playing and that is unlikely at present...
I think that is the sad point of this...I think he is 25 and he has walked away....It feels to me actually that he wanted to be openly gay, but actually felt he couldn't be as a pro-footballer.

I saw there were 8 gay footballers spoken to by Clarke Carlisle regarding "coming out"...7 refused too...

I know what you're saying Kiwi but, sad to say, coming out whilst being a pro footballer just doesn't seem to be an option. I shudder to think of the grief he'd get at matches. It'll happen 1 day - but it's a long way off and that's.. well we keep using the word - sad.
I'd have a slightly different take on it Betty. I think they were right not to come out because of the stick they'd receive from the terraces.
I feel kind of sorry for all gay people because they do get a fair bit of grief, even nowadays. But if those lads were to come out, they'd get no sympathy from me if they then started complaining about chants etc they'd inevitably get from the crowd. They can't have it both ways.
People must accept there are consequences to their actions.
So should black players now stop complaining about racist chants fro the crowd then ?

Familiarity breeds acceptance and so the more players that come out (past or present) the better.
The ability to deal cope with the terraces will be through a supportive dressing room and that needs more heterosexual footballers to know/have known gay players and to have liked them as people.
The fans in turn will be more forgiving when some of their own players are openly gay.
I think that's how it has improved in society (even though it's far from perfect) and football is just lagging 20-30 years behind.
Just my thoughts/observations.

How many of the crowd at a PL match would be gay? Gays are now part of every facet of life so why should it be a big deal? It's because football brings out the worst of human nature in it's basest form. Mindless 'tribal' behaviour that is totally unacceptable in all other parts of society. It really is a conundrum...

That was exactly my point....because of the chants and derision...they have to hide who they really are...that is the sad part..US in the crowd..we are the sad part of this.
But what if Adel was gay...and he is our superstar...perhaps we wouldn't jeer him.
If Rooney was gay...Man U may not jeer him, and if Torres was gay...(no we'd still all jeer him for just being c@@@)
That is what should happen....bit it will not happen for years to come.
It has taken us 100 years to decrease the racial element to some degree, it will take us that time again to fully accept the gay population...

Of course not but they shouldn't use it as an excuse for not performing. Our Club has suffered because of Ferdinand's off-field bullsh*t and there's no excuse for it.
If he was, he'd never come out because his own community would disown him. The morons in the crowd would be the least of his worries.
Truth is, if you're gay you should keep it to yourself if you're a pro footballer. Not for any homophobic reasons but because you'd bring a whole load of unnecessary sh*t down on top of yourself but more importantly - your Club. If one of our players came out and then their performances dipped because of the stick they were getting, they should be dropped from the team.
The Club comes first each and every time no matter what.
