I think they already doing that m8, and have been for the last 1600 years give or take a decade.

 

I don't think you are going to get any takers for a philosophical debate about the nature of good and evil Raving. If I'm not biting I don't know who else will. Obviously right and wrong are concepts which vary depending on place, time/era and culture, but I don't need a God, a Platonic ideal type, or a debate over crumpets overlooking the quad to know what they are for me. And I'm definitely not a moral relativist either - some things are wrong no matter what era or culture you are in - genocide, incest, child sexual assault, rape, maliciously pushing someone down the stairs with no reason - whether or not the culture condones it and its common practice. I can understand that the Islamic culture in Niger forces girls into unwanted marriage from age 13, but that doesn't make it right.

Why haven't you written a blog post for so long?

 

Happy not to discuss further sb but I think the relationship between moral relativism and a lack of belief is worth considering further! Probably not the time or place.

I started the blog thinking it was a great idea but very quickly ran out of steam - new job didn't help!! Should probably close it now...and the latent twitter account...

 

Raving, I am absolutely not suggesting you stop trying to spark a debate, its just that I think you won't get any takers - the debate is on a more visceral level than that.

Obviously, I'm not a philosopher but I'm surprised that atheistic philosphers agree that morality is a problem.

Atheist morals, at least in my experience, are self defined and as pointed out, subjective and amendable but why is this a problem. It means two atheists can meet, talk and influence each other and then walk away with refined versions of their owns morals - why is this bad?

I can, with little uncertainty, predict that rape and murder will be socially unacceptable throughout my lifetime which will fit with my personal beliefs on my deathbed. In hundreds of years that may change but atheism isn't an organised event. I'd say atheist morals are more in the realms of existential(?).

I wouldn't get drawn into a debate on use of good and evil since previous discussions on that have meant that Mr Blobby can't be classed as a bad song.

If religion was able to show a bit of flexibility then perhaps religions wouldn't clash so much.

I suppose I should have said that I would consider it to be evil, in the same way as I consider murder to be evil. I didn't have to look it up in a book. In what circumstances could it be a good act?

 

You could be pushing them out of the way of an onrushing elephant. Or they could be threatening your infant child, who you are trying to save. Or they could have asked to be pushed down the stairs as part of an elaborate drinking game. Or you could be a member of a religious cult that sanctions pushing fellow believers down stairs as an act of devotion to their god.

You get my drift, its a stupid game played by people who wish to debate a redundant question about whether morals are somehow objective and external to us. Next step, similar sterile and unresolvable debate about the existence or otherwise of a deity.

 

Yes, I realised after I posted that I was leaving myself open to answers such as those, Stan.

I'm just a simple bloke who gets offended when, as Geneva did, religious people question how atheists can have morals.

 

The point is - some muslim kid at school / on the way home / on a side street is going to get their face slapped or worse and it is legitimate because of thus 'cee u next tuesday' politician who speaks some inflammatory rubbish. Shocking that he is first minister of anything. Some family are going to wake up in the night smelling smoke as their house is torched etc. This is cause and effect because of what he has said. He gives the chelsea - like fans in our community the authority to do their good work in hurting others.
