I always wondered about that - excuse my ignorance but was the school named after Sir Henry Cooper the boxer or was there another famous SHC? I really hope it's the latter as why the fook would a school be named after a) a boxer and b) a boxer not from the area? Im really prepared to be made to look a right dense twat over this....
From Wiki... "In 1854 Sir Henry Cooper was elected Mayor of Hull and, on the occasion of the visit of Queen Victoria in October of that year, he received a Knighthood. He became a member and first Chairman of the Hull School Board in 1871. When the Board Schools opened in 1876 at Bean Street, Hull, they were named the 'Sir Henry Cooper Schools' and, following their closure, the name was transferred to this school when it opened in September 1967"
Paul Heaton, house martins & beautiful south is from Sheffield & is a Sheffield Utd fan from what I remember, I thought the other guy Dave was from Hull though.
John Aldertons parents used to own the same shop in Hull that my parents did. My parents had it in the early eighties. His sister lived just up the road.
I think Hugh Whittaker the drummer was from Hull, Stan the guitarest was from Birmingham. The drummer Hugh went to prison for arson!
Just seen other comments re Housemartins - apologies for duplication. I saw them play Kilburn back in the day - superb. Kingmaker were another good indie band from Hull.
Slightly off topic but one fictional celebrity who was NEARLY from Hull was Jack Carter, as portrayed by Michael Caine in the 1970's film Get Carter. The book was actually set in Scunny but when the film was commissioned the director's first choice was to set the story in Hull. He'd been here in late 50's whilst in the merchant navy and thought Hull the perfect setting. Alas, when he returned in the early 70's a lot of the areas he planned to film in had changed, demolished, etc. So, he opted for his second choice - Newcastle. And not a lot of people...........well you can guess the rest.
Joe is the bloke who lives next door to the Royles with his daughter Cheryl. Ricky Tomlinson plays Jim. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129711/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Only the drummer John was from Hull. I think he was the cousin of Max, who owned Maxim's(that hotel on Anlaby Road).
