If I remember correctly, Hull's original name was Wyke, and the name Wyke derives from the Old Norse Vik which means creek. Wyke was one of the original settlements founded by the invading Danes as they established the Kingdom of JórvÃk (Yorkshire). The Kingdom was divided into separate þriðjungr (Ridings), and Wyke (Hull) was in the austr þriðjungr (East Riding). So yes, you are a mong for think we're not a part of Yorkshire.
Great pics, makes me a bit homesick, but I'll get over it with some sun & beer in the Caribbean, although won't be Black Sheep!
I never said Hull was not in Yorkshire I'm well aware that is it, what I actually said was that it is detrimental to the future prosperity of the Humber area being lumped in with the collosus called Yorkshire and that we need to fight our corner instead of hoping for development scraps. Humberside was at least a start, as was the Humber Bridge, you know the bridge from nowhere to nowhere. The creation of an administration area was only a start but the Yorkies/Yellowbellies argument got in the way and the rest, as they say is history. In the meantime in the real world Leeds had billions spent on it both road and rail links were improved whereas Hull, after the Humber Bridge, got a cheap swing bridge over the River Hull that broke down on its inauguration day. I'm still waiting for the Castle St improvements to start whilst grand plans have been announced for a Northern Corridor to combat the growing influence of the South East of the country, not that it includes Hull of course. Guess where the grand plan finishes?
Exactly. By definition you cannot have four ridings as the Norse word from which it derives is cognate with the number three. In fact our word for the number 'three' derives from it's original form as does the German 'drei'.
Thanks for posting that Ben. Brings back some happy memories. Too bad there's so little of our area. I've forwarded it to my six kids (all born in the US/Canada) to remind them what a beautiful region their relatives came from and how proud they should be of their roots!!
In the middle East Riding a camel. In the far East Riding a rickshaw. Somewhere in the East Riding an elephant.
Stop been ****. I'm more like to use Hull City AFC than East Riding of Yorkshire. I'm well aware which Yorkshire the ER is, I just don't feel inadequate enough to tack it on. Hull or the East Riding works just fine, especially when most people who are interested would ask "oh, whereabouts on the East Riding?"
