Bumpers are for racehorses with little or no experience being taught their trade. As such things very often go wrong. More often than not they are run at a dawdle and turn into three furlong sprints. There is little form to go on and whilst we often get them right we equally often get them devastatingly wrong.
OSCAR TANNER ran in one at the weekend and following his Southwell farce I fully expected him to win or go very close. There was a Henderson horse in the race so it was always going to be difficult to win. He drifted after a bit of early money which looked pretty ominous.
In the race itself he was ridden by the trainers inexperienced son and Oscar Tanner flatly refused to settle despite being nicely covered up on the rails. When horses pull this badly all they are doing is using up valuable energy reserves that are needed at the business end of the race.
When the race started to quicken he was tapped for toe and also managed to get caught in a pocket boxed in by weakening horses. By the time young master Hughes had got him in the clear the front two had flown.
Despite earlier antics though he did run on astonishingly well and if anything he was gaining ground in the closing stages. The race was of course one by the Henderson horse and as this one was carrying a penalty it is probably safe to assume that he is pretty decent.
If and when Oscar Tanner learns to settle he will certainly be winning races and hopefully us our money back.
Most people on here accept winners and losers with good grace as part of the territory. However, on Saturday afternoon this defeat was apparently greeted by the aforementioned ChelseaCOE2012 with a certain amount of rudeness. I did not see the post and I neither know nor care whether any of you agree with him.
ChelseaCOE2012, I backed the horse BOG and each way mainly due to the presence of the Henderson horse. So I didnt lose. I am sorry if some of you did but as far as ChelseaCOE2012 is concerned "I am a QPR fan, so if you were ever to benefit even from the steam that rises from piss I would feel aggrieved". So like the flag that my nickname refers to...........stick it up your arse!
