It was actually fifteen years, as he'd already served two when they gave him the thirteen and I think that's the actual term, rather than him getting out half way through as you do here.

Here (England & Wales) a murder conviction carries with it a minimum term e.g. life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years. 17 years is the minimum the individual would serve before being eligible for parole. In reality, it usually takes a further 7-10 years before release on life licence is granted.

The average sentence served for murder in England is 16 years.

I'm aware of that, but the numbers you used gave the suggestion that a murder here would incur a longer sentence, I was just pointing out that the sentence Pistorius got was about the same as you'd get here (my original post was a bit lazy, there's a perception that everyone serves half their sentence here and I was assuming people might think he'd only serve part of it, particularly as he got out on license after five minutes after the original sentencing).

You’re right on the perception point. Admittedly it does not help when the court refers to it as a life sentence but then appears to award a determinate sentence. But the sentence is for the remainder of their life when you include the licence element.

Where it gets interesting is the starting point for that minimum term. IIRC it is a minimum 25 year term for murdering someone with a knife.

A whole life order is exactly that but these are very rare indeed and are on a case by case basis.

That seems a bit steep for killing someone to be honest.

You get less for stealing millions.

For killing a police officer or prison office it is a 30 year minimum term. This is under review with it likely to increase to a whole life term (starting point with a judge able to exercise discretion in mitigating it down).
