I see my self as British first then Welsh as I come from a family that has English, Australian, Welsh, Scottish and Italian in the mix. I was born in England but was only there for 6 months. My family were moved to Australia and we were there for 2 years until we returned and moved to Cardiff where we all grew up. I absolutely hate GSTQ, it is out dated and painful on the ear (imo) but it is the British national anthem and those who wish to sing it, crack on, those who don't want to sing it, fair enough. JH, it is not an English national anthem, strangely England does not have an official national anthem. Wales is a principality of England so is represented (like it or not) by the Union Jack in its current form. Maybe the flag also needs updating to reflect the current climate along with all national anthems?
No, Ireland has one and northern Ireland has one. They sing both when Ireland play because the Irish team is a mixture of Irish and northern Irish, northern Irish can claim dual nationality.
John, that's the Republic of Ireland. Nothing to do with GB ... and they only ever play the both of them when Ireland play at home (or more specifically in the Republic of Ireland) The Irish squad is selected from ALL of Ireland so each anthem appeased both NI and RoI contingencies in the squad. its all politics mate Like taff said, like it or not, we're all British and GSTQ is the British anthem...even for the N.Irish. I consider myself Welsh by birth, British by default. I don't recognise it or respond to it or the Royal Family and it seems neither do a lot of us on here. Pont does and I respect him for that although he's just agreed to become a mod so, technically, he's a little unhinged anyway (just kidding boss ) EDIT: JH, what taff said ^^^
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is the national anthem of Wales and i fully support them in not singing the uk/english anthem, mind you none of them should be there anyway.
ok, lets ban bellamy, taylor, ramsey and allen from the welsh team, as well as bale as he was in the frame before getting injured. what a nonsensical argument mabon
Swamp its only nonsense if you don't mind risking the national team, which these players appear not to mind. You have an opinion and so do i and if i had my way they would face a ban.
Mabs, but all assurances from FIFA and UEFA were in place that the national identities were not at risk prior to the GB team being decided. It has been mentioned time and again so why you persist in bringing this up as an issue is confusing.
Hey Taff, Liked that Badge so much that I,ve copied it and changed the word "Fire" to "Pride" going to get up to Ink2Skin in Ogmore Valley and get Kenny to tattoo it on my leg. Nice one for that, can see a few more having it as well, may look at it in Black and shading, perhaps keeping the Bluebird blue?
Taff ,Wales has the oldest flag in europe as the red dragon and is not represented in the union flag at all . So if GSTG is not the english anthem why do they usae it as one or are they so up their own arse to assume that they are the UK ?
exactly CCFC, anyway if the players sing it then they will get slated by welsh people, they're damned if they do and damned if they dont.
taff the only assurances that were received were verbal , the FAW asked them to put it in writing, they are still waiting, blatter himself warned the celtic nations to leave the olympic football team to the english, as combining could lead to a unified british team . we trust FIFA at our peril thats why it is still an issue
I'm aware of that but I didn't design the Union Jack (I ain't that old!) so I don't know why Wales is not presented on the flag. Maybe they are not very imaginative.
True, you can't have faith in what Blatter says but if he's stated the above then you have to question his motives.
Can't claim it as my own work. A fella with the handle Karlmpayne designed it along with some others. He gave me permission to use it http://www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=84191
Wednesday night - sing GSTQ or don't sing GSTQ - everyone has a choice. However, for heaven's sake please do not boo it. The world will be watching the game and what sort of image do you think that will portray of Wales? I guess many people will be travelling from England for the game and the last thing we want or need is a crowd problem over this. The best outcome for Wales is that we get behind the team during the game and provide a much better atmosphere than was evident at either Old Trafford or Wembley. I'm looking forward to it. I never thought I would be able to say I had been to the Olympic Games. I enjoyed the torch being carried through Bridgend and my wife was a course marshall for the torch but this takes it up another level.
So Wales has one and engerland has one and side made up same as the rugby with mixed players so wny not sing both then as they do?
So based on that logic, if the team contained players from Great Britain and northern Ireland they should sing 3 national anthems and tell England to get their own national anthem, alternatively one GB & NI anthem for all.
